Matt Bettencourt, better known as Retro Toy Envy online, is a thrift store dealer.

He scours local Goodwill stores and estate sales for bargains he can turn a profit on.

In a recent YouTube videoMatt revealed what happened after spotting a rare watch at the thrift store.

The watch was nowhere to be seen, but buried among the rubbish in a mysterious jeweled jar.

However, Matt spotted the retro-looking Seiko through the glass and decided to bet on the $200 pot.

Emptying the bottle at home, the dealer discovered the watch was the 1980s Seiko Pulse Meter.

“What makes this so special is that it measures your pulse,” he explained.

What’s more, this thrift store bargain was in excellent condition.

“It’s in beautiful condition, and I actually don’t think it’s ever been used,” he said.

Matt did some research and saw that he could sell it on eBay for $250.

I bought my watch 50 years ago for $345 – and the expert told me it’s actually worth $700,000, all because I kept the receipt

This meant I would make a profit on the entire $200 pot with just a single item.

“Vintage clocks are in high demand,” Matt said.

Previously, he found a highly sought-after Seiko with an orange dial at Goodwill.

Buying it for $130, he sold it to another buyer in the parking lot immediately afterward for $500.

Valuable economic discoveries

Thrift stores and garage sales are full of valuable items waiting to be discovered by shoppers.

TO WATCH

Watches can be extremely valuable and often appreciate in value over time.

An Air Force veteran who purchased his watch for Antiques Roadshow was recently surprised to discover how its value had increased.

Dave purchased a Rolex Oyster Cosmograph while in service in 1974 for just $345.97.

The style was popularized at the time by actor Paul Newman.

Dave was shocked when the appraiser told him his watch was now worth between $500,000 and $700,000.

This is because the watch was in perfect condition, having been stored in a safe for 40 years.

Find out how a thrift store shopper found 18k gold jewelry for just $30.

And how others are finding gaming consoles worth hundreds of dollars for just $8.
