My regular $20 bill sold for $7,500 — an expert said it’s common, but a “ladder” detail makes it “crazy” valuable

A MONEY expert has revealed what to look for in the serial number of dollar bills that could be worth $7,500.

Coin and currency expert Eric Miller (@thecoinchannel) explained in a TikTok why the dollar was “crazy” valuable.

“Only the big collectors know this, and why would they share this knowledge?” he said at the beginning of video.

A close-up of the $20 bill showed the serial number was 01234567, which is called an ascending ladder bill.

It can also occur in reverse in a descending staircase and can appear on banknotes of any denomination.

The note sold on eBay was certified and had a high grade, increasing the price.

An ungraded $10 bill was still worth $2,500 on eBay.

Miller admitted that most people don’t check their bills or coins for small details like the serial number.

Still, he urged viewers to pay attention for the chance to find a note worth more than its face value.

Coin and money collectors also look for notes with solid serial numbers.

This is when the serial number is the same number repeated over and over again.

A viewer sent Miller a photo of a 1990 $100 bill with a solid serial number of four.

“I’m surprised almost every day by the things people find,” Miller said.

“So many people collect it.”

The note was in good condition and stored in a plastic cover, contributing to its high value.

Miller estimated the bill was worth $2,000 because it wasn’t certified, but if the viewer got a grade, that could increase to $5,250.

Solid serial numbers are highly sought after by collectors, who regularly pay more than $500 to get one.

Only one in every 11 million printed banknotes has a solid serial number, according to The penny hoarder.
