Who is in Knives Out 3? What we know about the cast

ANDvery much like a Knives out the film is meticulously planned: the beautiful locations create a sinister atmosphere; carefully planned twists are revealed at just the right moment; even the sweaters are loaded with meaning. But the best part of this comic book mystery franchise is the cast.

It’s not just that each film is packed with heavy hitters like Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Plummer and packed with unexpected cameos. (How much did Netflix pay Serena Williams and Yo-Yo Ma to appear in jokes in Glass Onion? How about Ethan Hawke and Hugh Grant?) Director Rian Johnson and his casting directors, Mary Vernieu and Bret Howe, understand the ensemble required for the special alchemy of a successful cop. It takes a certain caliber of actor to sell a film that is full of ideas but not too serious, exciting but not ridiculous.

There are several categories of actors that are crucial to any Knives out mystery: The young discovery (Ana De Armas, Madelyn Cline); the hilarious actor (Michael Shannon, Dave Bautista); the dependable comedienne (Toni Collette, Kathryn Hahn); the multi-hyphenate phenomenon (Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe).

Johnson often asks his actors to play with or against their famous personas. The first Knives out the film cast Chris Evans as a scoundrel at the height of his fame for playing the best goody-two-shoes superhero, Captain America. Josh O’Connor

Glenn Close yet didn’t win an Oscar. She came close so many times, including with The wife, which I’m not sure anyone saw. And then there was her nomination for her role as Mamaw in Hillbilly elegy. But you know what? We don’t need to talk about it. AND Wake up Dead Man Will Close finally win that sweet Oscar gold? If she channels it 101 Dalmatians energy, I think Netflix could start a campaign. We know from years of Scandal that Kerry Washington can give a hypocritical speech, and I would expect Johnson to write one for her in this movie. The director and screenwriter likes to make fun of the rich and powerful in this franchise and has already skewered heirs to vast fortunes in Knives out and technology billionaires in Glass Onion. Who will he go after next? Will Washington express his outrage like a hedge fund billionaire bemoaning taxes? An Olivia Pope-style fixer hired by British royalty after a family member was caught in an indecent situation? The head of a company raising Taylor Swift ticket prices?

Cailee Spaeny

Cailee Spaeny, consciously or not, is currently vying for the position of Hollywood’s new “it” girl. She previously starred as a woman trapped in a gilded cage in Sofia Coppola’s film Priscilla and a ruthlessly ambitious war zone photographer in Alex Garland’s film Civil war. Later this summer, she will prove her talent in horror films in Alien: Romulus. Her portrayal of the wide-eyed Priscilla Presley, in particular, reminds me of Ana de Armas in Knives out: An innocent man slowly begins to understand how fame and wealth become corrupting forces. Spaeny could very well be our point of view character.
