LONDON – Prince Harry has been granted permission to appeal the British government’s rejection of providing him with publicly funded police protection in the UK

The Court of Appeal has given the Duke of Sussex the green light to challenge a decision earlier this year in the Superior Court. Permission was granted in May, but was only released on Thursday.

Judge Peter Lane ruled in February that a government panel’s decision to provide “tailored” security as needed after Harry stepped down as a working member of the royal family was not illegal, unreasonable or unjustified.

“To the extent that the case-by-case approach may have caused difficulties, it has not been demonstrated that they are capable of overcoming so great an obstacle as to make decision-making irrational,” Lane wrote.

The long-running row began more than four years ago when Harry first challenged the panel’s decision, arguing that he and his family needed an armed security team because of hostility directed at him and his wife Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, on social media and relentlessly. persecution from the news media.

Harry, 39, the youngest son of King Charles III, bucked royal family convention to challenge the government in court and sue the tabloids.

He won a great victory in December, after a judge concluded phone hacking in Mirror Group Newspapers it was “widespread and habitual”. He still has two similar cases against the editors of The Sun and the Daily Mail.

The security case appeared closed after the High Court in April rejected its first request to appeal Lane’s decision. But Justice David Bean of the Court of Appeal said on May 23 that he could challenge the trial court’s decision.
