The show had an average audience of over 32 million across its first seven seasons and in its eighth and final season, concluded in 2019, it averaged 46 million across US platforms. The show is also the second most awarded television series in Emmy history, so it makes sense that HBO would use the show’s popularity and expand its universe. The public did not have to go long without new The Game of Thrones content, with Dragon House spinoff debuting in August 2022.

Dragon returns for its second season on June 16, but it probably won’t be the last The Game of Thrones property to reach your screens. Several other spinoffs are also in the works; however, the status of each project is constantly changing. To stay up to date on which shows are coming up and which have already been axed, here’s a guide to the status of each The Game of Thrones derived series.

After a wait of almost two years since its debut on HBO, the highly anticipated second season of Dragon House is finally coming to Max. The show’s first season was an instant hit, amassing a dedicated fanbase and earning eight Emmy nominations.

The prequel series is set almost 200 years before the events of The Game of Thrones and precisely 172 years before the birth of the main character, Daenerys Targaryen. Season 2 sees Rhaenyra and Alicent lead their factions – Team Green and Team Black – in a fight for the Iron Throne.

Snow-Filed

Among the various spinoff projects planned for the The Game of Thrones universe, Snow it was the only direct sequel. Kit Harington, who played Jon Snow in the original series, has signed on for the project which Thrones book author George RR Martin confirmed it was happening on his blog in June 2022. However, the show may be dead. “That’s not happening — and it won’t happen anytime soon,” Harington said. Weekly entertainment in April. He said the development team “exchanged a few ideas and nothing really clicked for us.” He continues: “It just didn’t happen. I don’t think we want to do something that isn’t worth it. So for now, we’re just shelving it.”

The original idea for the show was to follow Snow after the events of The Game of Thrones. A quick recap for those who don’t remember: Snow realizes that Daenerys is his aunt when he discovers that he is not Ned Stark’s son, but rather his nephew. Her mother was Lynna Stark and her father was Rhaegar Targaryen. He is sent to the Night’s Watch at the Northern Wall after killing Daenerys in the series’ final episode.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms-Pre-production

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is so far the only other The Game of Thrones spinoff has been greenlit by HBO. The show, previously titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Knight Errant, was one of the many productions affected by the Hollywood strikes in the summer of 2023, but has already been cast and is scheduled to begin filming this year. The launch is scheduled for 2025.

The show centers on Martin’s collection of novels called The Tales of Dunk and Egg. The author wrote on his blog that the new program “will be much shorter than The Game of Thrones or Dragon House, with a very different tone.” The six-episode series will be set just a century before the events of The Game of Thrones and will follow two characters: Dunk (Peter Claffey), a squire who tries to pass himself off as a knight, and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), a “diminutive” squire who will later gain prominence.

Underside of the flea-Canceled

Underside of the flea was an idea for a show that would explore King’s Landing’s poorest district, but it was in its early stages of development before being canceled.

Aegon’s Conquest-Under development

Although it has not been officially confirmed that the show will happen for sure, The Hollywood Reporter wrote this HBO Found a Writer for a Show centered around Aegon the Conqueror. The show is still in the early stages of development, but Matthew Tomlin – co-writer of the 2022 sequel Batman film – is attached to the project. It is said that the show will take place not too soon before the events of Dragon House and tell the story of Aegon Targaryen – the famous king of Westeros. Aegon is credited with uniting six of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros through a devastating conquest on the back of a dragon.

Ten thousand ships-Filed

An idea for a prequel revolving around Princess Nymeria, 1,000 years earlier The Game of Thrones, was conceived, but ended up discarded. Screenwriter Brian Helgeland, who signed on to write, counted Inverse that the show is not moving forward — for now. “I think they felt like the period of my show was too far removed from the pillars of the original,” he said during the interview. “That’s why it hasn’t been picked up yet, but nothing is dead.”

Regarding the plot, Helgeland said that “it was the story of Moses, but exchanging him for Nymeria”. He explains that Nymeria’s country “lies in ruins and its people are forced to live off the water, which is why the show was called Ten thousand ships.”

Sea Serpent/Nine Voyages-Under development

Audiences met the Sea Snake, Corlys Velaryon, in Season 1 of Dragon House. There were rumors of publications in 2021 that her story would be told in a spinoff series with the working title: Nine trips. According to Deadlinethe title refers to the nine great voyages that Corlys embarks on in a ship called Water snake. Back in December, Martin announced on his blog that due to the nature of the show, it would work best as an animated show, and that appears to be the plan now.

“Budget constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, with half the show taking place at sea and the need to create a different port each week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to …well, and so on,” Martin wrote in his December blog post. “There’s a whole world out there. And we have a much better chance of showing all of this with animation.”

According to Weekly entertainmentthe pilot script is being written by Bruno Heller, who wrote The mentalist It is Pomegranate.

Blood Moon-Canceled

Blood Moon was almost the successor of The Game of Thrones. The show filmed a pilot that reportedly cost HBO $35 million to make and starred Naomi Watts. According to reports, it is said to be set thousands of years before the original show and centered on the events that led to the Long Night War against the White Walkers. The official logline said the show’s plot “chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes to its darkest hour. And only one thing is certain: from the horrible secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, from the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it is not the story we think we know.”

However, the premise alone wasn’t enough to save the show and it was scrapped entirely. “A lot more invention was needed; it was bigger risk, bigger reward,” said HBO CEO Casey Bloys. counted The Hollywood Reporter. “There was nothing egregiously wrong with it. Development and pilots are difficult.” Robert Gleenblatt, president of WarnerMedia, echoed Bloys’ sentiment in the same story, saying, “It wasn’t unwatchable or horrible or anything like that. It was very well produced and looked extraordinary. But it didn’t get me to the same place as the original series. It didn’t have that depth and richness that the original series pilot had.”

The Golden Empire-Be determined

Given the backlog of live action The Game of Thrones projects awaiting the green light, it makes sense that some producers are exploring the potential of animation. Sea Snake/Nine Voyages may be heading in that direction, and another project called The Golden Empire may be going that way too. This project is about Martin’s version of imperial China, which in the show is called Yi Ti.

Not much has been said publicly about the status of this show, HBO or otherwise, but Martin updated his fans on the project in a 2022 blog post. “Several months ago news leaked that one of the animated shows would be set in Yi Ti”, says the post. “That’s true. Our working title is The Golden Empire, and we have a great young writer on it too, and I think the art and animation will be beautiful. I would tell you more if I could. I don’t think I can say a word about the other animated shows. Not yet.”

Robert’s Rebellion—To Be determined

In 2021, Weekly entertainment reported that HBO was looking for more The Game of Thrones spinoffs and was meeting with writers about different ideas. One of them was about Robert’s Rebellion, a war in which Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark and Jon Arryn depose Aerys II Targaryen, also known as the Mad King, a few decades before the events of the original series. Not much has been said about this project and there doesn’t appear to be any update regarding its status.
