WREXHAM, Wales – The sequence turned out to be just as good for Wrexham.
The Welsh team, owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, won promotion to the third tier of English football thanks to a 6-0 home victory over Forest Green on Saturday.
It’s back-to-back promotions for the team since it rose to prominence following investment from its Hollywood owners. It is two levels away from the Premier League.
“This is the trip of a lifetime,” Reynolds wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the game.
Wrexham needed to beat Forest Green and see MK Dons and Barrow drop points to secure automatic promotion to League One with two games remaining.
Wrexham’s victory was never in doubt as they were 4-0 up at half-time. MK Dons squandered an early lead by losing at home to Mansfield 4-1, while Barrow lost to Gillingham 3-0. This sparked mass celebrations at Wrexham as fans rushed onto the pitch after the final whistle, despite pre-match warnings from the club asking them to remain in the stands.
Wrexham are second in League Two, four points behind leaders Stockport, who also secured promotion on Saturday. The top three teams are automatically promoted to League One, and fourth-placed MK Dons can no longer catch Wrexham.
Reynolds and fellow actor Rob McElhenney purchased the little-known club for $2.5 million in 2021.
Last season they won the National League title and returned to the English Football League – the three divisions below the Premier League – for the first time in 15 years. This is the first time in the club’s 159-year history that it has been promoted in two consecutive seasons.
“A few years ago, if you told me I would cry tears of joy over a match taking place in North Wales, you would have been Rob McElhenney,” Reynolds wrote in his social media post. president of crime. Double the city!
The team’s journey was chronicled on the “Welcome to Wrexham” program.
