LONDON – Queen Camilla made an appearance at Central Court in Wimbledon on Wednesday.
Camila, wife of King Charles IIIsat in the royal box, where guests included actress Keira Knightley, actor Richard E. Grant and Formula 1 driver George Russell.
Last year, the Queen and Kate, Princess of Wales, made separate appearances at Wimbledon. It was unclear whether Kate, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, he would visit before the tournament ended on Sunday.
Camilla was greeted on Wednesday by a ballboy and a ball boy – the kids who run around the court chasing loose balls after a point is finished or a serve goes wrong.
Among others she met was Martyn Falconer, head gardener at the All England Club.
The Queen lost a match to Novak Djokovic on Center Court. The seven-time Wimbledon champion was scheduled to face Alex de Minaur, but the Australian Withdrew because of a hip injury.
In the first match on center court Elena Rybakina defeated Elina Svitolina of Ukraine 6-3, 6-2. Svitolina did not notice that Camilla was present.
“It’s a great privilege to play Wimbledon in front of the queen, although I didn’t know it,” said Svitolina, who won a match on Monday despite the devastating news about the deadly shooting.
