NEW YORK — Could there be a new Taylor Swift album release without some additional surprises?
No.
On Friday, the pop star released her 11th album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” an amalgam of her previous work and reflecting the artist who — at the height of her powers — spent the last few years re-recording her life’s work and touring his material, filtered through synth-pop anthems, break-up ballads, provocative and mature considerations.
But this was midnight. At 2 a.m. Eastern time, she released “The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology,” featuring 15 additional songs.
“I’ve written so much excruciating poetry over the last 2 years and I wanted to share it all with you, so here’s part two,” Swift wrote in an Instagram caption. “And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours.”
The songs are a natural continuation of the first half of the album; many return to his “evermore” and “folklore” sound, with the help of his collaborator Aaron Dessner.
This isn’t the first time Swift has surprised her fans, and it certainly isn’t the first time she’s done so with a surprise album release. A few months after the release of “folclore” in 2020, she announced that “evermore” would arrive at midnight on the same day. And speaking of midnight, she released a “3am” edition of “Midnights” with seven new tracks in 2022, a few hours after the original release.
