NEWPORT, RI – A crowd of about 10,000 braved the heat and humidity to witness the 70th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, one of New England’s largest music festivals.
The festival, which ends on Sunday, is also one of the largest multi-day jazz festivals in the world. It has brought legions of people to Rhode Island’s coastal community over the decades. Held at Fort Adams State Park, festival-goers benefited from cool ocean breezes, a hint of rain and fog.
Artists from this year’s festival included Elvis Costello, Meshell Ndegeocello, Jantar and Samara Joy. Over the years, the festival has hosted Muddy Waters, Tito Puente, Isaac Hayes, Gillespie dizzy and dozens of others. Gillespie recorded a live album in 1957 at the festival.
The festival sold out all three days this year.
