The Idol actor subtitled the scary teaser “unprepared certainty…” that seems to be the title of the album.

The animated clip begins with an image of a boy standing in front of a deserted house as a storm gathers above him.

A feeling of unease accompanies the boy – probably representing the musician’s younger self – as he walks through the different rooms of the abandoned building.

He is taken to a grandfather clock that turns back time, while The Weeknd’s avatar is transported to a church where he finds himself looking into a mirror.

The video ends in a moment of surprising serenity when the young man finds himself embraced by a hooded woman, when the lights go out.

The teaser features previously unreleased songs from the album, as fans flooded the comments section asking the Canadian superstar to “drop the album” while praising the clip as a “cinematic experience.”

“Every artist might as well sit down, he’s about to fall over,” read one fan comment.

“I have no words, the new era is finally happening,” wrote another Instagram user.

“I’m going to lose,” commented a third person. “Seriously.”

A fourth person said they were “crying at 5am” after watching the teaser which had over 637,000 likes and 13,000 comments at the time of writing.

It has the same visual style as a previous video The Weeknd shared on Instagram, with a mysterious caption: “when you look long enough into the abyss, the abyss looks back into you…”

Fans in one Reddit Forum dedicated to The Weeknd has predicted that the Grammy winner is gearing up to release the first single from his new album on Friday.

“We will definitely have a single on Friday,” declared one user. “This teaser feels much more special than the others, like something important is coming.”

Others began to decode the many Easter eggs that The Weeknd inevitably worked into the teaser, including a reference to his debut mixtape, House of Balloons, released in 2011.

The album I’m working on now is probably my last breath as The Weeknd. This is something I have to do. Like The Weeknd, I’ve said all I can say.

House of Balloons is the Toronto house nickname where The Weeknd lived during the early days of his music career.

He explained the meaning of his nickname in a 2015 interview with Rolling Stoneadding, “We would have these horrible parties and invite the girls, and try to make it celebratory, so we would have balloons.”

END OF AN ERA

Redditors theorized that his latest work will pay homage to his career while reinventing himself from the ground up, as the house in the video was filled with deflated balloons.

“YOOOOO THE BALLOON HOUSE WITH ALL THE BALLOONS DEFLATED?! ALL THE BALLOONS PAST? IF ***ING KNEW HE WAS GOING TO SHOW THEM, LET’S GOOOOO,” wrote one Redditor.

The Weeknd began teasing a new musical era in January when he suggested his sixth album would be the final chapter in a trilogy that began with After Hours and continued with Dawn FM.

In an Instagram post, he shared the album covers for 2020 and 2022 respectively, followed by a photo with a question mark.

The post’s caption read: “3.”

In an interview with W Magazinehe also shared that the upcoming album is “probably my last hurrah as The Weeknd.”

“This is something I have to do. Like The Weeknd, I’ve said everything I can say.”
