Justin Timberlake was arrested on Tuesday in the Hamptons and is accused of driving while intoxicated, Yahoo Entertainment confirmed with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. The singer reportedly told police he had “a martini.”
The “SexyBack” singer was charged and released without bail. A spokesperson for Timberlake has not yet responded to Yahoo Entertainment’s request for comment.
What happened
On Tuesday, the Sag Harbor Police Department released a formal statement sharing details of Timberlake’s arrest hours earlier.
At 12:37 p.m., the musician was driving a BMW when officers observed him “failing to stop at a properly posted stop sign and failing to maintain his lane.”
“A traffic stop was initiated by an officer from the Sag Harbor Village Police Department and upon investigation it was determined that Mr. Timberlake was operating his vehicle while intoxicated,” the statement read. The “No Angels” singer was “placed under arrest, processed and detained overnight for morning arraignment.”
Timberlake was arraigned at Sag Harbor Village Justice Court at 9:30 a.m.
A spokesperson for the district attorney’s office also confirmed to Yahoo that Timberlake was arrested “for driving while intoxicated.”
“He was arraigned in Sag Harbor Village Justice Court and released on his own recognizance. At this time, we have no further comment,” a DA spokesperson said in a statement.
Timberlake had dinner at the American Hotel on Monday night, according to People. He was heading to a friend’s house when he was stopped. He was handcuffed for the hearing, according to the outlet. He was released on bail. His next court date is July 26.
Lawyer Ed Burke, who represents the singer, said Us weekly “the charge was a single charge because he refused a breathalyzer test.”
“Mr. Timberlake was also charged with two other citations, running a stop sign and failing to travel in the correct lane of traffic,” he added.
When contacted by Yahoo, Burke declined to comment.
Timberlake was photographed leaving the court – wearing jeans, a graphic tee, a short-sleeved shirt and a cap. He was accompanied by his lawyer and two other people, according to People. The outlet noted that his wife, Jessica Biel, was not present.

Sag Harbor Village Police Officer Michael Arkinson wrote in his report that it was “verified” that Timberlake was driving the BMW “in a state of intoxication as his eyes were bloodshot and glassy.” Arkinson stated that there was “a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emanating from the [Timberlake’s] breathing.”
The singer reportedly had “slow speech, was unsteady, and performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”
The Hamptons are on New York’s Long Island and serve as a summer playground for the rich and famous.

Timberlake is currently on the road with his “Forget Tomorrow World Tour”. Over the weekend, he performed in Tampa and Miami. This weekend, he will play two shows in Chicago, followed by two in New York, on June 25th and 26th.
Timberlake’s wife Biel was in New York filming the Amazon series The best sister. On Monday night, she was filming in Central Park. Biel posted a Tribute to Father’s Day to Timberlake, with whom he shares two children, the day before.
