The 96th Academy Awards were handed out on Sunday night in Los Angeles, where many of Hollywood’s biggest stars gathered to celebrate the year’s best cinema.
Christopher Nolan’s sweeping epic about J. Robert Oppenheimer – the American physicist considered the “father of the atomic bomb” – entered the night with the most Oscar nominations (13) and won seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor. and Best Supporting Actor.

“We made a movie about the man who created the atomic bomb,” said Cillian Murphy, who won Best Actor for his portrayal of Oppenheimer, in his acceptance speech. “And for better or worse, we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world. So I would like to dedicate this to peacemakers everywhere.”

won his first Oscar
won the first Oscar in his more than 40-year career, winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.
“I would like to thank my terrible childhood and academia, in that order,” Downey said, before thanking his wife, Susan Downey.
“She found me a rescue pet that loved me back to life,” he said. “That’s why I’m here.”

Ryan Gosling Oscar Nominated Barbie the song didn’t win – the trophy went to the other Oscar nominee Barbie song (“What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell) – but its live performance brought down the house (er, Dolby Theatre).
He wore a pink suit and gloves in what appeared to be an homage to the 1953 Marilyn Monroe classic. Gentlemen prefer blondes. And an army of other Kens joined Gosling, as did Barbie director Greta Gerwig, co-stars America Ferrera and Margot Robbie – and even Slash.

Poor things star Emma Stone – who suffered a wardrobe malfunction some time before taking the stage to accept the Best Actress Oscar, blamed Gosling. “My dress is broken,” Stone said. “I think it happened during ‘I’m Just Ken’.”
Stone then gave a passionate, tearful speech in which she thanked all of her fellow Best Actress nominees (Lily Gladstone, Carey Mulligan, Sandra Hüller and Annette Bening), the former Best Actress winners who introduced them (Michelle Yeoh, Sally Field, Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron and Jessica Lange), her husband, parents and daughter, Louise, who turns three this week.
She “turned our lives into color,” Stone said.
Almost naked John Cena presented an Oscar
In a nod to the notorious 1974 Oscar incident, Cena presented the Oscar for Best Costume Design to Poor things while wearing nothing but what appeared to be a flesh-colored piece of cloth covering her nether regions.
He used the envelope containing the winner’s name to cover himself before quickly changing clothes when the lights went out.
Geopolitics was on display – inside and outside the theater
The ongoing wars in Ukraine and Gaza were on the minds of many Sundays – both inside and outside the Dolby Theater.
Mstyslav Chernov, director of 20 days in Mariupol, gave a powerful speech upon accepting the Oscar for Best Documentary.
“I wish I never made this film,” said Chernov. “I wish I could change this [for] Russia never attacked Ukraine, never occupied our cities.
“Cinema forms memories and memories form history”, he added. “Thanks to Ukraine.”
Stars – including Mark Ruffalo, Billie Eilish and others – wore red badges calling for a ceasefire in Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war.
Outside, a group of about a thousand protesters gathered a few blocks from the red carpet, calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the LAPD “has stepped up patrols in the area in anticipation of the protests.” According to the policeonly one arrest was made.
Kimmel read Trump’s mean tweet
Just before the Oscar for Best Picture was (rather clumsily!) presented to Oppenheimer, Kimmel told the audience he wanted to read aloud an analysis of his hosting performance that he saw online. It was a post from former President Donald Trump.
“There has EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at the Oscars,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “His openness was that of a below-average person trying very hard to be something he is not, and can never be. get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another sold-out but cheap ABC ‘talent’, George Slopanopoulos.
I’m surprised you stayed up so late,” Kimmel said in response. “Haven’t you already spent your prison sentence?”
