Fashion followers and fans often wait all night for Rihanna’s big arrival.
But as Monday’s gala dragged on, the 36-year-old’s absence became increasingly noticeable — until it dawned on her that she wouldn’t be attending.
Now, a source close to the singer said People Riri was actually planning an appearance, but was sidelined due to the flu.
The Diamonds singer reportedly tried to overcome the illness and even traveled to New York after appearing in Miami on Sunday for the F1 Grand Prix.
Her stylist was also seen at the Carlyle Hotel greeting her security team, according to Page six.
Just days before the gala, Rihanna teased her appearance, noting that she was putting the finishing touches on her intended look.
“I’m actually just keeping it really simple this year,” she said Extra, revealing that she had two dress options. “Very simple…compared to everything I’ve ever done.”

Last year, she arrived late as always, wearing a huge all-white outfit.

The faux skirt featured grass and flowers throughout, while her train doubled as a patch of grass with pink flowers.
The top of the dress, however, was the star of the show, as it was a large mushroom-shaped jacket that branched out with tree branches and birds.
O AI-generated images were so convincing that fans flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their reactions.
“OMG? She got the job done,” one user said of Rihanna.
“My Riri doesn’t disappoint,” wrote another.
“She always makes a statement. What a fashionista,” added a third.
X has since placed disclaimers on tweets showing off her prom dress.
The new alert said: “Readers added context they thought people would want to know.”
“This is AI or digitally altered. Rihanna, at the time of this posting, has not yet arrived at the Met Gala,” read the message in the tweet depicting Rihanna.
