People close to the production said TMZ that the Movie & TV Awards will skip 2024.

While it’s unclear why the network is canceling this year’s ceremony, strikes by SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America possibly contributed to the postponement.

The event will return next year with an updated format.

Drew Barrymore, 49, agreed to host the 2024 edition after skipping last year’s show, according to Variety.

‘CHOOSE TO WAIT’

In May 2023, Drew stepped down as host in support of striking Writers Guild members.

“I have listened to the writers and, to truly respect them, I will stop hosting the MTV Movie & TV Awards live in solidarity with the strike,” the actress said in her statement at the time.

“Everything we celebrate and honor in film and television is born from his creation.”

“And until a solution is reached, I choose to wait, but I will be watching from home and I hope you will join me,” she continued.

“And I can’t wait to be a part of this coming year when I can truly celebrate everything that MTV has created, which is a show that allows fans to choose who the awards go to and is truly inclusive,” the statement concluded.

Held at The Barker Hangar in Los Angeles, the awards ceremony still aired in May 2023 without a host.

The MTV Movie Awards were called the ‘worst ever’ as fans ‘cried’ at Drew Barrymore’s surprise cameos after stepping down as host

Talent interviews and the red carpet event were also cancelled.

Due to the writers’ strike, the live portion of the awards show was canceled and only its pre-recorded segments were aired.

Actors such as Pedro Pascal, 49, and Jennifer Coolidge, 62, received the awards at their homes.

Overall, viewers were not thrilled with the end result and criticized MTV on X, formerly known as Twitter.

2023 MTV Film & TV Awards

Here’s how the executive producer of the MTV Movie & TV Awards planned the hostless 2023 edition:

In last year’s discussion with VarietyBruce Gillmer, president of music, musical talent, programming and events at Paramount Global, planned to weather the strike.

The Movie & TV Awards “will not pursue” the strike and plans to “deliver to the fans.”

There would still be a live performance and prize distribution, with pre-recorded thank you speeches.

“We have backups of our backups,” Bruce said.

“And we’re planning to keep as many of the show’s signature elements intact as possible.”

“We will have a live audience and it will still be a live event,” he continued.

“Different, with more pre-recorded packages and so on, which are scalable, but will still have that live event feel,” he concluded.

While some of the originally scheduled talent may not appear due to the strike, Bruce mentioned that athletes, celebrity chefs and influencers were not affected and could fill in.

Although he supported Drew’s decision, Bruce welcomed her back as host in 2024.

‘TERRIBLE PRODUCTION’

“The worst awards show ever,” scoffed one critic.

“Wow! MTV has really gone down… this has to be the worst awards show I’ve ever seen.” another added.

“What a terrible production this is,” noted a third.

“Should have been delayed until the writers got back or at least a Zoom audience of fans gathered,” a fourth person commented.
