ON May 13, 2024, news broke that Grammy-winning saxophonist David Sanborn had passed away – he was 78 years old.

Surviving the beloved musician is his wife, Alice Soyer, and here’s everything we know about them.

Who was David Sanborn?

David Sanborn was a saxophonist born on July 30, 1945, in Tampa, Florida, and raised in St. Louis.

At the age of three, Sanborn contracted polio, according to his website. His recovery led him to learn to play the saxophone.

“By the age of 14, he was already playing with legends like Albert King and Little Milton,” his website states.

He eventually studied music at Northwestern University and the University of Iowa.

After his graduation, he joined the Butterfield Blues Band, where his career took off.

Sanborn began playing saxophone on hit songs like Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book and David Bowie’s Young Americans.

In 1975, he released his first solo album called Taking Off, followed by Hideaway in 1979.

Over the course of his successful career, Sanborn has received six Grammy Awards.

Furthermore, eight of his 25 albums have gone gold while one has gone platinum.

In March 2024, Sanborn was honored with a lifetime achievement award for jazz music.

“I’m so glad I’m alive to receive this” he said at the time.

“I am deeply grateful and extremely honored to receive this award in my hometown of St. Louis.”

Sadly, Sanborn passed away on May 12, 2024.

Similar to Sanborn, his wife, Alice Soyer, is also a musician.

Born and raised in Paris, France, Soyer made his living as a composer, pianist and vocalist.

Bob James and her husband have significantly influenced the career she has today.

Eventually, the two working together turned into romance.

Speaking with All about jazzSoyer said she was first introduced to her husband when she was dating James and heard Sanborn playing.

“I didn’t see him right away, but I heard him,” she told the outlet.

“Then we talked at dinner. It was so nice and so natural. He was very encouraging. He told me to keep writing, that it was great and so on. Then they played my song on their show and that was just unreal.”

She went on to say that the two started dating in 2016.

When asked how long they’ve been together, Soyer responded, “Four years and we’re feeling more and more in love.

“This time we spend together brings us closer and closer.”

What is the cause of David Sanborn’s death?

David Sanborn passed away after a long battle with prostate cancer.

“It is with a sad and heavy heart that we convey to you the loss of internationally renowned and six-time Grammy-winning saxophonist David Sanborn,” his social media accounts said.

“Mr. Sanborn passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, May 12, after a long battle with prostate cancer with complications.”

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2018; however, he continued to act until his untimely death.

The statement also revealed that he had shows scheduled for 2025.
