BEYONCE’S mother Tina Knowles praised her creative grandchildren and also encouraged them to be good people as they rise to fame.
On Monday, Tina, 70, appeared on Today with Hoda & Jenna to promote her and her superstar daughter’s Cécred hair product line.
When talking to Hoda Kotb, 59, and Jenna Bush Hager, 42, about fashion, motherhood and several other topics, the businesswoman spoke briefly about being a grandmother.
Tina is grandmother to Beyoncé, 42, and her husband Jay-Z’s daughter Blue Ivy, 12, and twins Rumi and Sir, six, and her daughter Solange’s son Julez J. Smith Jr., 19.
Jenna asked, “What do you like about being a grandmother? I know it is one of your deepest joys.”
The House of Deréon designer responded: “It’s the best.
“With grandchildren you don’t have the pressure of taking responsibility for their outcome, so you can just indulge them and let them have squeaky toys that motivate their parents. [crazy].”
Tina continued: “It’s just the best, they are the best, my grandchildren are all super creative and I love them so much.”
Hoda asked, “What do they call you?”
“They call me Grandma,” Tina replied happily.
Hoda then asked about some of Tina’s grandchildren “going down the musical path” and if that’s something she’s “watching.”
Blue has won a Grammy and often joins her mother on stage as a dancer during performances.
“We’re watching, but you know, they still have a lot of time,” Tina replied.
She continued, “They’re all super — they’re great artists, visual artists, and very smart, so we don’t know what’s going to happen. Whatever they want to do, we just want to support that.”
When discussing raising her children, Tina revealed how she instilled confidence in them by telling her hosts: “Just for them, I think the first thing [I taught them] it was being a good person no matter what you choose to do in life.
“It sounds cliché, but it’s true.”
