In the obituary, Richard’s family wrote that he died peacefully on Sunday, surrounded by those closest to him.

No other cause of death was given in the text.

Before becoming an on-screen star, Richard was arrested more than 20 times, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor listed his crimes as “forgery, bank robbery, credit card theft, miscellaneous crimes and cheating… [guilty of] almost everything except drugs and homicides”, during a 1987 interview.

Despite the high number of arrests, Richard was only convicted once.

The conviction landed him behind bars for 8 1/2 years in New York’s Sing Sing and Attica prisons.

After being released from prison at age 32, Richard turned his life around.
