DANCE Mom’s Kelly Hyland revealed she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
The 53-year-old reality TV star said she noticed she was losing weight, among other symptoms, before getting a mammogram.
Kelly, mother of dancers Paige and Brooke Hyland, shared the news in an emotional interview.
The star had a biopsy which confirmed the bad news, she has grade 3 invasive carcinoma.
This means she has rapidly growing breast cancer.
Kelly revealed the clues that led her to schedule a check-up with her doctor.
“The first red flag was my significant weight loss,” the Dance Moms alum said AND! News.
“I lost enough that other people noticed and asked for tips on my diet, but there was nothing I changed in my day-to-day life to cause the loss.”
Kelly kept an eye on her body and any changes before noticing a lump in her breast in March.
She quickly booked in to have it checked before being referred for further testing.
“I scheduled a mammogram,” Kelly admitted.
The star has always emphasized the importance of checking your body for signs of illness and taking tests at home.
“I had just had one eight months earlier and the results were clean. However, this new mammogram and ultrasound didn’t work, it came back showing a mass.”
“It was malignant,” she discovered after the biopsy.
Kelly noted that she was surprised by how quickly the mass appeared after her clean exam a few months earlier.
“I was shocked that I had grown up so quickly and scared of the battle I knew I was about to face.”
FAMILY REACTION
Kelly shares three children with her ex-husband, Randy Hyland.
Paige and Brooke have frequently appeared on Dance Moms, while their other son, Joshua Hyland, 24, has remained out of the spotlight.
All three of her children live far from her in Pittsburgh, while Kelly lives in Florida.
She had to tell her beloved children the news over the phone.
“I wish I had told them in person,” Kelly said.
“But a phone call was the best I could do under the circumstances.
“I had a call with all my kids because I wanted to tell them at the same time and make sure they were all getting the same information,” she admitted.
Kelly revealed that it was an extremely difficult conversation for the family.
EMOTIONAL MOMENTS
Paige admitted she didn’t know what her mother would reveal, but she had a bad feeling before calling.
“As soon as she told us the bad news, I felt like I was in shock and was quickly hit with a whirlwind of emotions,” she revealed.
“I was not only scared, but also angry, sad and confused why this would happen to someone as amazing as my mother.”
“We lost my Nana to cancer in 2019,” Paige continued.
“Then I understood the long road ahead and it pained me to imagine my mother having to endure the same feeling.”
Josh admitted he was scared and speechless when he received the news, but he doesn’t expect his mother to make a full recovery.
“I’m very hopeful that it’s just the first stage, I feel like she caught on quickly,” he said.
“I know my mom is strong enough to get through this.”
Kelly’s strong relationship has often been documented on screen, with the star known for feuding with dance teacher Abby Lee Miller.
HIT BACK
In season four, the adults get into a verbal altercation that quickly turns physical.
“You’re eating my face,” Kelly yelled at Abby as she approached her pretending to chew at a competition in New York.
Kelly then slapped Abby in the face, who later called the police to try to press charges.
Both daughters left the show following the recorded altercation.
“I think we both wanted out of the show, so I think we felt bad that our mom was carrying that guilt,” Paige said. ET recently.
“It’s actually like we want to thank her,” Brooke added.
“We see her as an amazing mother who was struggling to do what we wanted,” Paige continued.
