On November 18, 2016, Dr. Phil interviewed Shelley Duvall.

In an episode titled From Hollywood Star to Near Isolation: Helping The Shining’s Shelley Duvall, the host of the same name sat down with the aforementioned actress for her first interview in several years.

More about Dr. Phil and Shelley

“Unquestionably, this is purely a form of lurid and exploitative entertainment – it is terribly cruel.

“You are putting Shelley Duvall ‘on display’ while she suffers from a deplorable state of health.

“I hope others will join me in boycotting your utterly cruel form of entertainment because it has nothing to do with compassionate healing.

“Shelly Duvall was a movie star…whatever dignity a mere unfortunate creature may have in this world is denied to her by you displaying her in this way.”

The day before the episode aired, Dr. Phil received more negative reception and was accused of exploiting The Shining actress.

What happened during Dr. Phil’s interview with Shelley Duvall?

As Dr. Phil interviewed Shelley, many viewers noticed that the latter seemed unwell.

“I’m really sick, I need help,” she told the talk show host.

“If I say I’m healthy, the first thing they’ll do is hurt me tonight.

“There is a worrying disc inside me. I loved Robin Williams.

“I don’t think he’s [Williams] dead. The man threatening me is the Sheriff of Nottingham.”

At the end of the episode, Dr. Phil said he tried to get Shelley to receive mental health treatment in California.

However, she refused and returned home to Blanco, Texas with her life partner, Dan Gilroy.

Vivian Kubrick launched a GoFundMe page so Shelley could get proper help.

“Like many older movie stars, financial embarrassment is not uncommon,” Vivian said.

“Showing your love and support for Shelley Duvall by making a donation could get her back on the path to independence and perhaps back to health and for her fans, more great performances!”

Meanwhile, a Dr. Phil spokesperson told the same outlet, “We watch every episode of Dr. Phil, including Ms. Phil. Duvall and his struggle with mental illness, as an opportunity to share useful, relatable information and perspectives with our audience.

“We don’t attribute the stigma associated with mental illness, as many do.

“With no one else offering help, our goal was to document the fight and bring incredible resources to change its trajectory, as we have done for over 19 years.

“Unfortunately, she declined our initial offer of inpatient treatment, which would have included full physical and mental assessments, giving her the opportunity to manage her challenges privately.

“After many months of follow-up, in collaboration with her mother, she ended up refusing assistance.

“Of course we were very disappointed, but these offers of help remain open to this day.”

Dr. Phil explained further CNN: “I don’t regret what I did.

“I regret that it was promoted in a way that people felt was inappropriate.

“There are parts of this story that I haven’t talked about and won’t talk about specifically.

“But I can say in general that we work with her family [and] with her for over a year off camera, after the fact, providing her with opportunities for inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care.

“I can’t tell you how far we’ve gone.”
