NBC decided not to renew the show after granting several other shows a new season order.

Night Court, Lopez vs. Lopez and Happy’s Place, the comedy starring Reba McEntire, will return later this year and next.

Extended Family, however, was not renewed for next year.

Although no official reason was given, the first season of production was massively disrupted due to the SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Extended Family received a pilot episode in 2022, which was a huge success with several stars signing up, including Jon Cryer, best known for Two and a Half Men, Abigail Spencer, most recently on Grey’s Anatomy, and Donald Faison, better known as Dr. .Chris Turk in Scrubs.

Filming coincided with strikes, which made filming impossible for a few months.

Six episodes were completed before the strikes, and the show returned to production four days after the SAG-AFTRA strike ended.

The show finally premiered in December 2023.

Extended Family follows Jim, played by Cryer, and Julia, played by Spencer, as they navigate family life and parenting their children after their divorce.

The show gained a lot of fans on social media, with many of them upset by the news of the cancellation.

Chicago Fire star will leave the show after 12 seasons and fans were shocked

“@NBC I’m over you too. How dare you cancel Extended Family,” one upset fan wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“How can NBC expect to rebuild its once impenetrable sitcom reign if it keeps canceling all new ones after just one season? What happened to the real investment in its shows?” added another.

“I swear to God! It’s like NBC doesn’t want viewers!!!” noted a third exasperated fan.

Show creator Mike O’Malley seemed hopeful about the Extended Family renewal before the news broke.

I think our reviews were good. Everyone in our business knows how hard it is to find stories, write stories, write episodes

He began by saying he was “optimistic” about the show.

“But I’ve been here long enough to know that 80 million things could happen between now and then,” he said.

“I think our ratings have been good. Everyone in our business knows how hard it is to find stories, write stories, write episodes.

“We also have great kids. Everyone knows how hard it is to get a cast that feels like a family and is good at doing sitcoms,” she concluded.

ACTOR ATTACKS

On July 13, 2023, it was revealed that the Screen Actors Guild would go on strike – sparking curiosity about its possible ramifications on everyday Hollywood.

SAG-AFTRA went on strike due to a labor dispute with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

The strike was led by industry changes caused by streaming and its effects on waste.

He was also in favor of preventing other new technologies, such as AI, from replacing actors on set by scanning their faces to generate performances digitally.

SAG-AFTRA National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said the studios “left us no alternative” but to strike.
