The EXECUTIVE producer of popular sitcom Young Sheldon has revealed how they planned the shocking death of a major character.

Steve Holland shared why George’s death wasn’t shown on camera in the episode titled A New Home and a Traditional Texas Torture.

In the storyline, George Cooper Sr., played by Lance Barber, died of a heart attack, but his death was not shown on screen.

Instead, the producers decided to leave that part out of the episode, which Steve explained was the plan all along.

“It was always going to be off camera. We didn’t want to witness that moment of his death. We always knew we were going to deal with his death this season, but we never thought we’d see it on camera,” the producer said. Deadline about the shocking turn of events.

“So really, the discussion was when this would happen in the last few episodes and how the family would take the news.”

The Cooper family heard the tragic news of the patriarch’s death from George’s two best friends.

Steve also wanted to surprise fans by making this happen in the show’s seventh and final season, but not in the finale.

“I think at first we thought it would probably be the final episode or that the funeral would be the final episode. [producer] Chuck Lorre said the show has been a very positive and loving family show. Let’s not leave the public sunk in sadness,” Steve told the channel.

“Maybe there’s a way to do that and then move past it and show the family starting to get back together and ending with a little more of a moment of hope.”

In a separate interview with The wrapSteve elaborated further, telling the publication, “We’re always trying to look for ways where even if people know things [are] coming… we can surprise them.

“We thought if we fast-forward a little bit earlier and do it at the end of episode 12, people might not realize it’s going to happen, and maybe we could catch them off guard with that,” he added.

Young Sheldon is a spin-off of the hit series The Big Bang Theory.

The series finale will air on Thursday in two consecutive episodes.

Earlier this month, fans got excited about the upcoming episodes after The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons, 51, who Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage, 15, plays his younger counterpart, shared a TikTok of him on set .

The pair teased fans by pretending the app’s de-aging filter showed Jim as the adult Sheldon and Ian as his younger self as portrayed on screen.

“SCREAMING, CRYING, VOMITING, I LOVE THEM,” one fan commented on the silly video.

“I kind of expected it and I was STILL excited,” said another.

“Okay but this is amazing,” commented a third.

CBS previously announced that Jim and his The Big Bang Theory co-star Mayim Bialik, 48, whose characters were married on the show, would appear in the series finale.

Young Sheldon premiered on CBS in 2017, while The Big Bang Theory was still airing new episodes.

The latter officially ended its decade-plus run in May 2019.
