THE Good Doctor star Freddie Highmore has revealed why Dr. Aaron Glassman had to die in the series finale.
Viewers were left “in tears” when Aaron (Richard Schiff) died off-screen from terminal brain cancer during Tuesday night’s episode of the ABC medical drama.
During the finale, Freddie’s character, Dr. Shaun Murphy, tried to convince Aaron to undergo a rare treatment that could add a year to his life.
He eventually accepted his mentor’s decision not to proceed with the procedure and to enjoy the last three to six months of his life with his family.
He promised Aaron he would support him in his final days and they went for one last ride on the carousel he used to ride with his late daughter Maddie.
Aaron later saved Shaun from losing his medical license by pursuing non-FDA approved treatment for Claire (Antonia Thomas).

The Good Doctor finale ended with a flash-forward to the future, in which Shaun paid tribute to Aaron in a TED talk.
He revealed that he had created a foundation in honor of his late professor – the Dr. Aaron Glassman Foundation for Neurodiversity in Medicine.
Reflecting on the devastating ending, Freddie said Aaron’s death helped teach Shaun that being emotionally available to help loved ones is more important than medication.
“Shaun has always prioritized medicine; that was always his goal,” he said TV Line.
“This is what he needed to overcome the challenges he faced.
“For him to realize that he has reached a point in his life where he is now surrounded by people who love him, who are there to support him and who he cares about so deeply, it changes the way he views his priorities in life. .”
“It shows how far Shaun has come and what it means to have unconditional love and share that with people,” he added.
Aaron’s death left viewers at home in “confusion.”
“The Good Doctor series finale made me cry. Wow… I can’t believe my show is over,” wrote one on Twitter, formerly known as X.
“The final episode of The Good Doctor is taking me out. Every 5 minutes I’m crying again,” added another.
“If you didn’t cry watching the end of The Good Doctor, then you watched TV wrong,” wrote a third.

Aaron’s death comes just a month after Noah Galvin’s character, Dr. Asher Wolke, was killed off.
Asher was beaten to death in an anti-Semitic and homophobic attack.
He was attacked by two thugs outside a synagogue in the final moments of episode five, titled Who At Peace.
Fans were heartbroken when Asher died while her boyfriend Jerome waited at a nearby restaurant to propose.
