Series lead Sig Hansen, 58, captain and co-owner of the fishing vessel F/V Northwestern, revealed that the weather is a constant struggle for him and his crew while in the Bering Sea during an interview with Fox News Digital.

He told the outlet: “I mean, there’s always a challenge. The challenge is to be successful, right?

“There are life-threatening situations – I’ve been in a few of them. I think the biggest challenge is always the weather. That’s always a big issue and keeping the team motivated is always a big challenge.”

“You know, and finding crab. It will happen, it just takes time, but it will happen. Especially if you’re good and know what you’re doing.”

Hansen experienced several life-threatening situations as Captain of the Northwest.

“We have had events where the boat has frozen to the point where I thought there would be no return,” he explained.

Hansen continued, “We’ve had difficulties with mechanical issues where, you know, we’ve had, like, tanks where our crab tanks fill with water when they shouldn’t, and that creates instability in the boat. of this nature.

“There were a lot of challenges and there were challenges where I saw boats literally sink. You know, eight miles from me, and there’s nothing I can do about it,” he continued.

“You look at people and friends you know and you are literally in a fog. They’re right there and there’s nothing I can do about it, and they’re gone. ” he added.

Season 20 will see Captain Jake Anderson return to Northwest Hansen as a rookie after losing his own boat.

The new season will also follow Sophia “Bob” Nielsen as she takes command of the F/V Seabrooke and Johnathan Hillstrand as he comes out of retirement and tries to reach a $1 million quota.

It will also see cast member Jacob Hutchins fighting to win the spot as replacement captain on Rick Shelford’s F/V Aleutian Lady.

TWENTY SEASONS

Hansen attributed the success of Deadliest Catch to the fact that it is cross-generational, although the show was never intended to be for the whole family.

“Number one, it’s blue-collar and there’s a work ethic and I think people respect that. I think the program is a success because, over time, the photography has gotten better, the cameras have gotten better, the people who record what we do have gotten better, and I think that shows,” Hansen said.

Hansen admitted, “My wife and I watch what they film, and she just can’t believe it. She’s like, ‘Oh my God, I feel like I’m in this.'”

The ship’s captain continued, “Twenty years ago, that wasn’t the case. So I think it brings you closer together; it brings you into our living room, and I think it’s successful because it’s multigenerational. Grandma, Grandpa watches, grandson , granddaughter. It’s just multigenerational, and I’ve said this before: ‘This wasn’t supposed to be a family show.’

He confessed: “We use foul language. We do horrible things that shouldn’t be done, and families watch it together. It’s not a family show, but that’s what it ended up being.”

REWARDING EFFORT

Hansen said captaining the F/V Northwestern for the past 20 seasons has made him recognizable “everywhere on the planet.”

He revealed what’s most rewarding: “It’s the fact that when people come up to me and say, ‘You know what? You inspire me. I was in the hospital and I watched your show, and I swallowed it all.'”

There were many challenges and there were challenges where I saw boats literally sink. You know, eight miles away from me, and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

“When people tell me they are inspired by us, that is rewarding. Or if I go to a fundraiser and make a lot of money for a certain cause because I used my fame to do it, that’s very rewarding,” he added.

Deadliest Catch premiered in 2005, and although the show was designed to run for 10 years, Hansen revealed that he now feels like the series is running on “autopilot.”

“What goes through my mind is that you value some things. I know it’s not just me, but everyone appreciates it because it should be there,” he said.

“It’s crazy because wherever I go, whether I’m young or old, it’s like a generational bond. There is a generational knot that brings people together and that just amazes me,” Hansen said.
