SOFIA Vergara revealed an unlikely friendship with actress Jennifer Aniston, which helped her perfect her role in Griselda.
The 51-year-old star received rave reviews for her role as “The Godmother of Cocaine” Griselda Blanco in the Netflix miniseries.
But she was nervous about switching from comedy to drama after years on Modern Family.
Speaking at a Netflix FYSEE event in Los Angeles, Sofia said: “I don’t want to say that I have similar things with [Griselda]but there [are]because I [am] a woman, Colombian mother, single mother, immigrant.”
“There were a lot of similarities. And so I kind of understood that. But it took a lot of work to get the whole project going,” Sofia explained.
“The last three months before filming, I was like, ‘How am I going to do this? Do I need to find someone to help me with the lines?’

“I knew there was no way I could learn acting in three months.
“So I thought, at least someone to help me understand each scene because of English. Sometimes I have a lot of problems.
“And then I thought, ‘Which actors that I love have done comedy and now do drama?’
“Then I found the person who helped…Jennifer Aniston.”
HOLLYWOOD CONCERNS
Sofia detailed how she began connecting with Aniston after realizing she could help her in her new role.
“And then I started meeting with her on Zoom because it was the pandemic and everything. And then she would help me not enjoy acting, but start feeling everything I was supposed to feel in each scene,” she said.
“And then Andy [Andres Baiz]The director was the one who was responsible for teaching me bad things, like smoking, coming to my house, cocaine, crack, all of that.”
She joked: “I don’t know where he learned that [she laughs]. But it turned out well. Imagine at age 50 learning to do all these things.”
Sofia added: “We were lucky because there were six episodes and they were already written.
“So we started in order, which helped me incredibly. If you’ve seen the series, it starts to change and get crazier and crazier.
“I couldn’t exactly transform into her because it would take forever. So what I wanted to do was for Gloria Pritchett and I to disappear so that people wouldn’t think about [them].”
Sofia reunited with Aniston for The Hollywood Reporter Dramatic Actresses Round Table to discuss everything from guidance to menopause.
She again expressed her insecurities about her acting abilities, saying, “I did 11 years on Modern Family, but in some ways it was almost playing myself. I’ve never been to an acting class in my life.
“And when I decide to do something different, it’s difficult because that accent is beautiful, but it’s like, I can’t be a scientist, I can’t be an astronaut.”
THICK ACCENT
Sofia revealed that she had a relationship with Aniston’s acting coach, Nancy Banks.
She revealed that she struggled to break out of character, which she also spoke about at the Netflix event, hinting that it could have contributed to her divorce.
Sofia told The Hollywood Reporter: “I couldn’t sleep. I decided to take Xanax because I had to wake up the next day to go back.
“Either I start sleeping or I’m going to die. I was talking to Nancy too. I was like, ‘Nancy, I don’t know if I’m going to survive this.’ She’s like, ‘You’re an actor now.'”
She also talked more about how she tried to get rid of her thick accent to get more roles in Hollywood.
Sofia said: “I tried at the beginning of my career. When I moved to [Los Angeles], I’m like, ‘I can’t believe Penelope Cruz or Salma Hayek wouldn’t change their accent, they would have so many more opportunities. I’m going to do it.’
“So I spent a lot of money and time on people teaching me, and it was a fucking waste.”
