MARK Harmon opened up about returning to NCIS, revealing that it’s still up in the air whether fans will see Gibbs again.

The actor played Leroy Jethro Gibbs, known to viewers as Gibbs, on the CBS crime drama for nearly 18 years, making the decision to stop appearing on the show three years ago.

On the same day CBS announced the premiere date for the next season of NCIS and NCIS: Origins, Mark, 72, appeared at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

The actor appears on NCIS as a narrator, but his character, Gibbs, has not been seen on the series since 2021.

Fans are eager for him to return to the show, but it appears Mark hasn’t made a decision one way or the other yet.

“It wasn’t so much a decision to leave as it was the right time to step away a little bit,” he said of stepping back from the show, according to TV Line.

“I was thrilled with the storyline they created and how they handled the character,” Mark continued.

“And the show went on.”

NCIS fans have received few updates on Gibbs and his whereabouts.

The show briefly addressed his absence in the second episode of the show’s most recent season, during which the late David McCallum’s character Dr. Donald ‘Ducky’ Mallard was written out.

At the beginning of the episode, viewers saw an envelope addressed to McGee from Naktok Bay, a fictional area in southwest Alaska.

Inside the envelope was a Polaroid photo of Gibbs, McGee, and Ducky.

The photo suggested that Gibbs likely lives in Alaska, keeping a low profile.

As for when, if at all, he will return, Mark said during a panel discussion: “I get asked that a lot…

“I’ve always let the writers do whatever they want.”

Later, TVLine asked if he could return when the series came to an end.

RETURN DATE

On Saturday, CBS announced its fall schedule, revealing plans to push back its annual premiere week to mid-October for nearly all returning shows with the exception of Survivor.

NCIS and NCIS: Origins will return on the same day – October 14th.

The former will air at 8pm ET and the latter will air immediately after at 9pm ET.

STRANGE WARNING

Whether he comes back or not, Mark is quite busy.

The actor was discovered on a mission in Los Angeles in June, before filming Freaky Friday 2.

He looked totally unrecognizable in a red button-down shirt and dark shorts as he headed out shopping.

He was wearing flip-flops and squinting against the sun, his shaggy hair disheveled on his head.

Mark’s sighting occurred just before his official casting in Freaky Friday 2 was announced.

Disney has released the first behind-the-scenes photo from the set of the sequel.

In it, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis sat in front of their trailers, holding hands.

Jamie, 65, raised his free hand, making a rock and roll gesture as Lindsay, 37, smiled.

The actresses are set to reprise their roles as Anna and Tess Coleman.

Mark will reprise his role as Ryan in the film, which hits theaters in 2025.
