Hetty, played by actress Rebecca Wisocky, 52, is the ancestor of the series’ main character Sam Arondekar, played by Rose McIver, 35.

The uptight lady of the manor was the wife of the original owner of the Woodstone country estate, built during New York’s Gilded Age.

During the episode, a flashback reveals that in 1895 Hetty is informed that her husband Elias has disappeared and left her with all his legal problems, such as the child labor used in his factories.

After the police arrive to question her, Hetty locks herself in the library – where she and her husband recently placed one of the first telephones in the area.

Back in the present, Hetty claims she died of an accidental overdose while celebrating Elijah’s absence while joking, “I always said you can never take too much morphine, but apparently that’s not correct.”

The truth is revealed after she unwinds a telephone cord, which she used to hang herself, that was hidden under the collar of her dress and uses it to pull the ghost, Flower, to safety in the episode’s B plot.

In the final minutes of the episode, Hetty confessed to Sam and fellow ghost Isaac that she thought her death would protect her son, ensuring his wealth, but she didn’t give him what he really needed, a mother’s love.

She stated that she saw no way out before admitting that although her life was about keeping up appearances, behind the scenes she was unhappy and didn’t know how to ask for help.

“It was a mistake that I deeply regret. I still had a lot of life to live,” Hetty told Sam and Issac.

Issac replied: “You were in a hole. And sometimes, you need help to get out of it.”

Hetty, played by Rebecca Wisocky, revealed to Sam and Issac that her suicide was an attempt to help her son, but it robbed him of what he needed most, a mother.

FAN REACTIONS

Fans responded to the episode on X, formally Twitter, and revealed that while they loved the Ghosts episode, they weren’t expecting the dark twist of Hetty’s suicide.

One fan tweeted: “Very good episode of Ghosts. First of all, poor Hetty. Flower is back!”

“Wow, we finally learn how Hetty died and it’s devastating. I didn’t expect that from her character, which I think makes it all even more shocking,” wrote another person.

They added: “The subject is handled delicately by the writers and the actress. #FantasmasCBS.”

A third commented: “@rebeccawisocky I have to give you flowers, girl, in the last episode! Very moving and at the same time giving us comedy! #FantasmasCBS.”

“It’s great to have #Flower back, but I loved receiving #Hettythe story. We could see a hidden layer of pain in her… and she still managed to be hilarious! #ghostscbs“, mentioned a fourth.

A fifth fan tweeted: “Definitely one of the best episodes so far. @rebeccawisocky steals every scene she’s in every week, but this week’s episode has to be a personal best (and I loved her as Marge Slayton and Brenda Shettrick). #FantasmasCBS.”

While a guest on CBS Mornings, Rebecca Wisocky hinted at the big reveal surrounding Hetty’s death.

She told the hosts: “There are two ghosts [that] We still don’t know how they died, Hetty and also Sasappis played by Román Zaragoza.”

“This week you will find out how Hetty died and when I read it it really took my breath away,” she confessed.

The actress added: “I think it will be a surprise and will provoke a lot of conversation.

“A lot happens, you find out what exactly was going on at the Woodstone mansion in 1895.”

MISSING FLOWER

The third season premiere of Ghosts left fans upset after a popular character left the series.

However, CBS showrunners explained the character’s departure.

Not only did the season two finale end on a cliffhanger, but one of the beloved cast members had his last moments on the show.

Sam noticed that one of the ghosts had been “sucked in,” which is the term the show uses when one of their spirits ascends.

In the third season premiere, fans discovered that Flower, played by actress Sheila Carrasco, was the poor soul.

Flower is the 1960s-inspired hippie who was high on acid and tried to hug a bear and ended up dying.

Producers said Flower had a lot of growth at the end of season two, so it made sense for her to get sucked in, but there would also be mixed reactions to her rise.

Thor, played by Devan Chandler Long, would be “devastated” because he loved her more.

“It felt like it created a lot of stories for us to explore,” they said.

Fans were not happy with Flower’s departure.

Many Ghosts watchers have expressed their opinions on X, with one fan writing, “I’m going to miss Flower.”

“Is it Flower? I don’t believe it.” commented another.

“WAIT, WAS IT REALLY A FLOWER THAT WAS SUCKED????? I thought it would be something that would make you look !!!!!!!!!!!! #Ghosts #GhostsCBS,” a third added.
