A DANGER! The competitor spoke out after fumbling through a longer race in a way that left fans a little gobsmacked.
Two-day champion Marko Saric faced Nam Nguyen – who won for an impressive $26,299 – and Elly Trincett on Monday night.
The North Carolina math teacher was the winner, with a two-day total of $26,600.
It all came down to Final Jeopardy!, with Nam coming in with $28,200, Marko with $14,000 and Elly was in the red and didn’t compete.
The crucial clue read: “Best known for one novel, she wrote at least 6 full-length plays and collaborated with Moms Mabley on a Broadway revue in 1931.”
Nam incorrectly answered “Loraine Hansberry”, which Ken Jennings said was “very close” to the correct answer, Zora Neale Hurston.
Meanwhile, Marko wasn’t that close, as his incorrect answer was “Plath”, as in Sylvia Plath.
To begin with, the author of the bell jar was born in 1932 and was not a playwright, much less collaborated with the aforementioned black comedian.
‘LOL’
“Dude on Jeopardy actually wrote Plath as his answer when the clue said something about 1931! Like WHAT,” scoffed a viewer on X.
“Lol at the Jeopardy contestant who thought Sylvia Plath collaborated on a play with Moms Mabley,” wrote another.
A third Redditor wrote: “I completely understand finding the best possible answer when you’re not sure, but at the same time the concept of a Broadway Revue written by Sylvia Plath had me rolling.”
‘YES….’
Marko took the negative buzz on the chin and responded to the previous fan on a Jeopardy! Reddit gaming thread.
He wrote: “Yeah, not the best look! I got stuck on ‘known for a novel’, Pavlov was too quick for Plath, then I realized none The rest made sense. You’d think an avid crossword solver would know Zora ___ Huston (5)!”
Fans appreciated the candid response, when someone replied to him: “To be fair, I was thinking about Harper Lee…”
Another had to admit: “I can’t imagine a more incongruous pairing than Plath and Mabley!!”
‘DEEPLY UNHAPPY’
Meanwhile, fans noticed at the start of Monday’s game that the third contestant, Elly, was not wearing glasses.
She ended up wearing glasses at the end of the show.
At one point, she appeared to be reaching for her glasses, while also acting poorly and responding to fewer than 10 clues.
Nam took her to the same Reddit thread and shared that Elly had forgotten to wear her glasses due to nervousness.
He wrote: “Two important things for everyone to know: Elly forgot to put her glasses on due to stress at the end of the game, which was a deeply unfortunate disadvantage for her, which I was very sad to learn about at half-time, and Marko is VERY tall .
Marko then added: “I can confirm both.”
Marko will face two new opponents in Tuesday’s episode to see if he can turn his big win into a streak.
Danger! airs at 7pm ET on ABC – check your local listings.
