DANGER! Masters cut a major aspect of the show a few episodes into the competition.
After noticing the recent change, fans are speculating that it is due to James Holzhauer’s current position on the game show.
Season 2 of Jeopardy! The Masters started at the beginning of this month and there is still just over a week to go.
The show sees some of the best players on the show face off against each other to see who is the best of the best.
The six contestants this time are Amy Schneider, James Holzhauer, Matt Amodio, Mattea Roach, Victoria Groce and Yogesh Raut.
Each hour-long episode, hosted by Ken Jennings, features two games with different combinations of players against each other.
Before each game, the show usually starts by introducing the participating players their name and profession.
Fans noticed, however, that Jeopardy! stopped doing this after the second episode.
MAKING CHANGES
From episode 3 of the Masters special, only everyone’s names were said and not their occupations.
Viewers noted on an online forum that this did not happen at this point in the tournament during Season 1.
Some are speculating that this change is due to James’ performance, as his introduction typically included a confident joke about being a great competitor, but he is currently a distant third.
For episodes 1 and 2, the announcer shared that James’ occupation is being “the self-appointed Final Boss of Jeopardy!”
Currently, however, he is in third place with five match points and one game won, while Victoria and Yogesh are tied for first place with 10 match points and three games won.
FAN THEORIES
“I wonder if this has anything to do with James’s less-than-dominant (so far) performance and his ‘Final Boss’ line,” one fan theorized.
“That line doesn’t seem all that funny under the circumstances and could even be interpreted as a little embarrassing,” they continued.
“I wonder if James or the producers said ‘let’s stop with that line’ and they had the choice of changing James’ occupation (which is a bit like admitting he’s no longer the Final Boss) or eliminating them completely ”, the user added.
Other fans agreed with this theory, although some felt there were multiple reasons for the change.
“Maybe part of it,” said one game show viewer. “It’s also getting weird because they don’t want to say ‘Professional Jeopardy/Trivia Celebrity,’ which is what you do for a living once you’ve made enough.”

“I think the producers decided that making James the equivalent of a wrestling heel is over,” commented a second.
“It could be for the best in the long run. You could argue that James has almost locked himself into trying to come up with an increasingly clever name and it’s hard to keep one from standing out,” wrote a third fan.
“After a few episodes, we know their occupation. It’s not like they’re going to change jobs during the Masters,” suggested one Jeopardy! Fan.
“And probably a timing concern,” added another forum user. “At the Masters they don’t take a break in the middle of the first round for the What Have You Become segment[…] I assume this means they need to continue the game with less banter.”
Danger! The Masters continues on Monday at 8pm on ABC.
Two more new episodes will air this week – on Wednesday and Friday – before the semi-finals on May 20th and the finals on May 22nd.
