Name That Tune changes schedule just weeks after season 4 after falling ratings

The GAME show Name That Tune abruptly changed its schedule just five episodes into its new season.

The Fox series opted for a rerun on Monday, July 8, despite low ratings and the expectation that it would be weekly.

Unfortunately, fans who were expecting a new edition of Name That Tune on Monday were in for a repeat.

A rerun aired instead of a new Season 4 episode on July 8.

There was no announcement from the game show about the change on social media.

Furthermore, Name That Tune has been airing weekly on schedule since its Season 4 premiere on June 3, 2024, so fans were in for a surprise.

“No new episodes of #NameThatTune this week – tune in next week for episode 6,” one viewer wrote on X with a frowning emoji.

Fans can watch season 4 episode 6 next Monday, July 15th.

RATINGS ACHIEVE A LOW GRADE

Meanwhile, Name That Tune Season 4 struggles to reach a ratings crescendo, with an average weekly audience of 1.5 million.

The second episode of Season 4 hit a season high with 1.6 million viewers, but the subsequent three episodes have since declined.

Episodes three and four averaged 1.5 million viewers, while episode five fell to 1.4 million, according to Finale of the TV series.

That said, Name That Tune’s third season averaged 1.30 million viewers, up slightly from last season.

Plus, the Fox series has already been renewed for a fifth season, so there’s no sign of cancellation.

‘THIS IS NOT THE NOTE’

During the Season 4 premiere, fans reported a sick musical mistake when a clip from the show was shared on social media.

Valerie, from Staten Island, New York, faced Joey in the Bid-A-Note round.

Bid-A-Note is Name That Tune’s most famous segment, in which contestants face off to name a mystery song first.

Players are entitled to ten notes, and the competitor who says they can make the lowest number gets to guess the song.

Valerie took her breath away when she said she could name him in just one note.

Bandleader Randy Jackson played a single note for her on the set’s piano.

Valerie guessed “Vampire?” by Olivia Rodrigo, which was deemed accurate by host and 30 Rock alum Jane Krakowski.

She received $15,000 as the audience applauded – she ultimately won the game and took home $91,000 in total.

However, the note Randy played was not the song’s opening note, as even casual fans pointed out in the TikTok comments section.

“This isn’t even close to the initial rating, I don’t understand,” said one of the top comments.

“That’s not even the note the song starts on. Vampire starts with A, not D,” wrote another.

“That’s not the same note,” wrote a third.

“I thought, at the very least, it looks like the first note on your driver’s license,” wrote a fourth.

“Actually it doesn’t seem that way, apparently she had clues and that’s why she guessed,” wrote a fifth.

As the commentator highlighted, the round also involves getting a clue in advance, which was not part of the clip.

NAME THIS SONG EXPLAINED

Name That Tune is hosted by 30 Rock’s Jane with bandleader Randy.

The modern iteration of the classic game show sees two players compete against each other (and against the clock) to test their knowledge of pop songs with a live band.

There are different rounds played throughout each hour-long episode, with a rotating set of challenges in the first round:

• Upon request: a contestant chooses a category from six options and receives a song that fits
• Mixtape: all songs fit into a single theme
• No Shuffle: Naming a Song by Six Different Music Artists
• Remixed: naming a series of pop songs performed in different styles
• Spin Me Round: an electronic wheel is spun, choosing one of nine musical genres to play a song
• Title Track: Name songs that fit a topic provided by the presenter
• Blank That Blank: A portion of each song’s title is provided before it is played

Bidding a note is the final challenge. The player with the most money after that wins the game and goes on to the Golden Medley bonus round (with up to $100,000 up for grabs).

Name That Tune airs Monday nights at 8pm ET on Fox and is paired with The 1% Club which airs at 9pm ET.
