AFTER the final season of Survivor ended in May, fans have been debating the prize money on social media.

Many said they don’t think the prize money is enough, with some pointing to inflation and how expensive things have become.

On Survivor season 46, which ended in May, Kenzie Petty emerged victorious and went home with the $1 million jackpot.

But Survivor isn’t the only reality show to come under fire.

Others mentioned family favorites like Jepoardy! and the Family Feud rewards, saying they don’t think they’re enough for what the contestants are supposed to do.

Here’s a summary of the cash prizes contestants win and what social media users had to say about it.

SURVIVOR

Since its debut 24 years ago in 2000, the Survivor winner has walked away with $1 million.

Most recently, this was given to Kenzie, who told the Charlotte Observant she was “very full of the survivor’s experience.”

She said, “You know, never say ‘never,’ but I think I’m too full of experience with ‘Survivor.’

“My cup runs over. I have to do everything I wanted on my bucket list.”

However, despite Kenzie’s good time on the show, viewers said they would like the winner to win more than just a million.

“As another season of Survivor comes to a close, I have to say that I really think it’s past time for the show to increase the prize money.

“$1 million now is nowhere near what it was worth when the show started 24 years ago. The equivalent now would be approximately US$1.82 million,” written a user on X.

“I was saying that during the finale!!!! how is it still a million”, agreed another.

“Honestly, I feel like CBS should also go ahead and cover the taxes.

“Let the winner pocket the winnings in FULL. It will never happen, I know, but it would be the classiest thing to do, IMHO,” said a third.

Family feud

On Reddit, people have been talking about Family Feud’s overall prizewhich amounts to US$20,000.

The program, hosted by Steve Harvey since 2010, began in the 1970s.

However, as the program’s format has contestants in groups, it is divided into five parts.

“Definitely. $100k. A family of 4 making $20k isn’t much. I’m surprised by how enthusiastic some families are about this program,” one person wrote.

Another said: “I thought about this a long time ago. 20k sounds good, but that breaks down to 4k per member. Plus, after taxes, it only costs about $2,500.

“It’s not exactly life-changing money. It needs to be at least 50 thousand to be worth it.”

Someone wrote: “I think $20,000 is good for a base value, but you could increase the value to $100,000 in the final Fast Money for a 5x champion by eliminating the car.

“Or make a growing jackpot to find all 5 #1 answers, like some international versions have done.”

On Jeopardy!, there are three rounds and contestants can receive amounts of money ranging from hundreds to hundreds of thousands.

Although it has changed since the program began in the 1960s, the cost is $200 to $1,000 and $400 to $2,000 per clue.

Unlike Family Feud and Survivor, Jeopardy does not have a set amount for contestants to win.

In a Reddit thread earlier this year, people we discuss the value winners claim it as prizes, with some saying it should be bigger.

“They doubled the money in November 2001. It’s been the same since the Prime Minister in 1984. It’s been over 22 years and inflation is through the roof.

“I know they increased the consolation prize money for 2nd and 3rd place, but isn’t it time to double the value of the entire game?” the poster asked.

“I think they should leave the amounts on the board just for simplicity, but pay an appropriate amount like 1.5x to keep up with inflation,” someone said.

Danger! Host timeline

Danger! has had a tumultuous history regarding hosts following the death of the iconic Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are every host since the game show’s inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – from 1964 to 1975, he was the original host of the daytime version of Jeopardy! on NBC.

Alex Trebek – From 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted the modern iteration of Jeopardy! for 36 years until his death from pancreatic cancer.

Guest Hosts – 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested a series of guest hosts for one- or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was named host for a week before resigning amid controversy. He was the show’s executive producer at the time.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the show’s new host, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023, 74-time champion Ken (the winningest contestant of all time) joined Mayim as guest host and they shared hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after a long hiatus, having defended the writers’ strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now runs all editions of Jeopardy! including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the late night show and other primetime specials such as Masters.

“If it were just for inflation, this would have been the year to do it – $100 in 1984 was equivalent to $170 in 2001, and $100 in 2001 was equivalent to $173 in 2023.

“Also, it would have been appropriate if Season 40 was priced at $400-$4,000, which would be 40x the values of Fleming’s original version,” wrote a second.

“Oh my God, I was thinking about making a post about this.

I checked the math. We are past the point in terms of inflation that made Jeopardy double the last time they did it in 2001, but we are not at the point where current point values are just 50% of their value in 2001,” wrote another.
