DANGER! fans criticized the game show for what they saw as an unfair decision regarding the slight mispronunciation of a word.

Fans accused the game show judges of becoming inconsistent with their speech-based decisions.

On Thursday, Meredith Miller, Micah Rahn-Tiemeyer and Jay Fisher faced off.

During Double Jeopardy!, Jay chose the “Some Hats, Some Cattle” category for $1,600.

The question read: “The name of this breed of cattle prized for its marbled meat literally means ‘Japanese Cow’.”

Meredith walked in and replied, “What’s Way-gu?”

There was a hesitation before host Ken Jennings said, “Mmm, no.”

Jay and Micah didn’t show up.

“So close, Meredith. You didn’t have a ‘Y.’ Shakeyou,” Ken, 50, let her know.

That put Meredith in third place with $400.

FANS SPEAK

A danger! fan posted their thoughts on Reddit with other fans calling out the judges.

“The problem with the word Wagyu the other day got me thinking, I know Jeopardy is extremely specific about pronunciation, changing the sound of a word, no matter how subtle, makes the difference between a correct and incorrect answer,” the poster original wrote.

Danger! champion Jay Fisher admits he ‘worked too little to sleep’ after mistake ‘cost’ him the game and ended winning streak

“Some sounds, however, are similar enough to sound functionally identical when spoken in a normal cadence, words ending with M and N, for example.”

“I’m furious about this call,” said another.

“I saw a Trebek replay where the first competitor’s effort was correct by the judges and the game went ahead,” added a second.

“That stuck in my head because in a more recent episode, all three contestants said his name closely enough that it was clear they knew what they meant, and none of them were governed correctly. So tedious and pedantic when it comes to makes an accurate pronunciation game.”

Danger! Host timeline

Danger! has had a tumultuous history regarding hosts following the death of the iconic Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are every host since the game show’s inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – from 1964 to 1975, he was the original host of the daytime version of Jeopardy! on NBC.

Alex Trebek – From 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted the modern iteration of Jeopardy! for 36 years until his death from pancreatic cancer.

Guest Hosts – 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested a series of guest hosts for one- or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was named host for a week before resigning amid controversy. He was the show’s executive producer at the time.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the show’s new host, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023, 74-time champion Ken (the winningest contestant of all time) joined Mayim as guest host and they shared hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after a long hiatus, having defended the writers’ strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now runs all editions of Jeopardy! including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the late night show and other primetime specials such as Masters.

X fans also spoke out about the unfair decision.

“I can’t believe Jeopardy let someone down by pronouncing ‘wagyu’ like someone from Iowa; I would have gone up to my podium,” wrote one fan.

“@jeopardy wagyu… Are you kidding me… Nobody knows how to pronounce that word and you know what it means…” said another.

“Hey judges!!…Tell Ken Jennings Meredith was right!!…it’s Wagyu and not pronounced Wygu!!!” said another.

‘MAKE SENSE’

This isn’t the first time fans think a player was robbed.

Earlier this month, Jeopardy! and Ken received negative feedback about a harsh decision.

On July 3, Ken and the game show judges did not accept the answer from champion Kelly Proulx, communications director from Billerica, Massachusetts.

In the last clue of Double Jeopardy!, which was in the “Waterfalls” category, Kelly entered first.

“A waterfall in Yosemite with a thin ribbon of water that floats in the air like a diaphanous cloth is named after this marital outfit,” the $2,000 clue read.

Kelly responded with “What is Bridalveil Falls?”

“No, I’m sorry,” Ken said.

“It’s actually Bridalveil autumn, so we couldn’t accept that. It’s: ‘What is a Wedding Veil?’”

She was considered incorrect because she added an “s” to her answer.

This got her into Final Jeopardy! in last place with $8,000.

That being said, just two games prior, a contestant was allowed to say “lar-nyx” instead of “larynx.”
