Viewers of the game show flooded the comments with kind words for the pair, gently correcting James, 40, by only calling Mattea a “legend.”

James posted a photo on X, formerly Twitter, alongside Mattea, talking about the meeting in his caption.

“OMG y’all I just met a JEOPARDY legend,” he wrote.

In the comments, fans issued their correction.

“Two Jeopardy legends in one photo!” praised a supporter.

“You two are Jeopardy legends!” secured another.

“Icons being icons,” wrote a third commenter.

“I should be so lucky; I love watching you two!! Truly amazing!” a fourth commenter wrote.

“Two of my favorite champions,” said a fifth fan.

“TWO legends actually,” someone else posted.

JAMES GAME

James returned to Jeopardy! stage at Jeopardy Masters in May.

During the competition, fans noticed a connection between James and Victoria Groce outside of the show that they believe caused frustrations during the game.

The competition began in April with James, Victoria, Amy Schneider, Matt Amodio, Mattea Roach and Yogesh Raut competing.

In a matter of weeks, only four players remained before the semi-finals.

Danger! Host timeline

Danger! has had a tumultuous history regarding hosts following the death of the iconic Alex Trebek in 2020. Here are every host since the game show’s inception in 1964.

Art Fleming – from 1964 to 1975, he was the original host of the daytime version of Jeopardy! on NBC.

Alex Trebek – From 1984 to 2020, the late, great Alex hosted the modern iteration of Jeopardy! for 36 years until his death from pancreatic cancer.

Guest Hosts – 2020 to 2021, Jeopardy! tested a series of guest hosts for one- or two-week stints, including Anderson Cooper, LaVar Burton and Aaron Rodgers.

Mike Richards – 2021, he was named host for a week before resigning amid controversy. He was the show’s executive producer at the time.

Mayim Bialik – 2021 to 2023, when Mike was announced as the show’s new host, Mayim was chosen to host tournaments and primetime specials.

Mayim and Ken Jennings – 2022 to 2023, 74-time champion Ken (the winningest contestant of all time) joined Mayim as guest host and they shared hosting duties.

Ken Jennings – 2023 to present. Last December, Mayim announced on Instagram that she would “no longer” host Jeopardy! after a long hiatus, having defended the writers’ strike, and Ken was named sole host.

Ken now runs all editions of Jeopardy! including Celebrity Jeopardy!, the late night show and other primetime specials such as Masters.

Mattea and Matt did not qualify to advance in the tournament, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

James came third behind Yogesh, and Victoria came second and first.

In the first rounds of the show, hosted by Ken Jennings, there were two games with different combinations of competitors.

Fans speculated that James thought the games would be easy, as the announcer revealed that James’ occupation was “the self-appointed Final Boss of Jeopardy!”

After spending most of the tournament in third place, viewers noticed that James looked disappointed.

Some social media users noted that he was probably feeling even more frustrated because of his connection with Victoria.

“I’m a fan of James but he’s fighting Victoria,” one fan wrote on Facebook.

“He is clearly frustrated.”

“Since he knows her outside of Jeopardy, it probably affects him in a different way,” a second viewer suggested, pointing out that they are both Chasers on ABC’s The Chase.

On the show, contestants try to win money by defeating a trivia expert, known as the Chaser.

James and Victoria were top scorers on the show.

EVERYTHING OK, GROCE?

Also in May, Victoria revealed a serious injury she suffered.

She shared with social media followers that she sprained her knee before Jeopardy Masters.

During one episode of the show, she answered a clue like “Medical Collateral Ligament,” or the outside of the knee.

She laughed as she said, “I just twisted mine!”

Victoria wrote in X after the game that she wasn’t kidding.

“FWIW, I was serious about the MCL thing,” she wrote.

“I fell off a climbing wall last fall and landed on one foot. Not one of the best things you can do with your knee! #JeopardyMasters.”

Fans in the comments wished him a good recovery.

“I’m sorry to hear that, Victoria. It must be painful,” one fan posted.

“You are a Jeopardy monster, I can’t WAIT to see you and James battle it out on Wednesday,” a second commented.

“You’re killing it, Victoria. At this point, IBM Watson is scared of you,” a third jokingly wrote.

“You are doing a fabulous job! Rooting for you to win it all,” she posted a fourth.
