“You know, I like to do things that the whole family can see. Look, I’m 52 now. I’m a father of four. I have a son in college,” he told Yahoo Entertainment. (Wahlberg and his wife, Rhea Durham, are parents to Ella, 20, Michael, 17, Brendan, 15, and Grace, 14.) “I like playing age-appropriate roles. that and the audience is like – this doesn’t feel real.”
One thing Wahlberg believes audiences want to see is “the guy and the girl in the same age range,” which has been the case in several of his recent projects. “There are a lot of different things that I think the public frowns upon, and I want to do things that are believable and realistic,” he says.
This does not mean that Wahlberg Dance nights the days are necessarily behind us – “Listen, if the right script comes along, I wouldn’t rule anything out,” he says. But for now he wants to do “meaningful” projects like Arthur the Kingin which he stars and produces.
In the film, Wahlberg plays professional adventure pilot Michael Light. “[Mikael’s] probably one of the most selfish – and athletes have to be selfish to be successful – he’s a very selfish guy who did one of the most selfless things,” Wahlberg explains why the story spoke to him. “And when he was so close and could literally reach out and touch the thing that always meant the most to him, he was willing to sacrifice that to save Arthur, [changing the] trajectory of your life forever.”
Wahlberg says the training he received for the role was different from previous projects.
“Look, it’s not just any kind of bodybuilding competition out there. It’s who can suffer the most and who can have the most mental strength and endurance,” he says, noting how he trained as if he were really going to do the day-long adventure. race. “When I was doing it, it felt like I could actually do the role until the first day when I tore my meniscus and all of that went out the window.”
Another advantage of being 52 years old.
Wahlberg says everyone was worried and nervous that production would be shut down because of the injury.
“Mikael just had this big smile on his face,” he remembers, “like now you can really get an idea of what it’s like to suffer out there, because there’s no relief. They’re usually the ones who win.”
