DONALD Sutherland, known equally for his eccentric and dramatic roles over a six-decade career in Hollywood, has died aged 88.

Sutherland, who gained notoriety for roles in Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*H and, most recently, as President Snow in the Hunger Games series, died on Thursday.

The iconic actor died in MiamiFlorida, from an undisclosed illness, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sutherland was the father of five children, including Emmy Award-winning actor Kieferveteran CAA Media Finance executive Roeg, actors Angus and Rossif and daughter Rachel.

Kiefer, 57, mourned his father’s death and remembered him as “one of the most important actors” of all time.

“With a heavy heart, I say that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

“Personally, I consider him one of the most important actors in the history of cinema. He was never intimidated by a role, be it good, bad or ugly.

“He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Born on July 17, 1935, Sutherland rose to fame in 1967 in the classic war film The Dirty Dozen.

He has had a long career that has seen him star in major Hollywood blockbusters and high-profile TV shows.

The actor was married three times throughout his life.

His first wife was Lois Hardwick from 1959 to 1966, then he married Shirley Douglas from 1966 to 1970.

Sutherland and Shirley had twins, Kiefer and his sister Rachel.

At the time of his death, he was married to Francine Racette – the couple married in 1972.

The couple had three sons, Rossif, Angus and Roeg.
