A reboot of I KNOW What You Did Last Summer has been announced with Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to reprise her role.
Freddie Prinze Jr. has also been tapped to return as his character, but fans seem divided on the rest of the announced casting.

Sony has cast Outer Banks actress Madelyn Cline, 26, and Riverdale star Camila Mendes, 30, in the lead roles in the reboot of the 1997 horror film I Know What You Did Last Summer, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Also in negotiations are Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, Atlanta’s Tyriq Withers and The Little Mermaid (2023) star Jonah Hauer-King.
Scheduled for theatrical release on July 18, 2025, the Jennifer Kaytin Robinson-directed horror remake could also see Jennifer Love Hewitt, 45, and Freddie Prinze Jr., 48, reprising their roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively.
Hewitt and Prinze previously returned to the series in the 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, while they skipped 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer as it featured an entirely new cast and did not see a theatrical release.

In 2021, Amazon debuted a series based on the property – it also excluded the main actors from the original film.
In January 2022, the streaming series was canceled after one season.
News of the reboot was shared on the Film X, formally Twitter, account Discussing Film, where fans weighed in on the newly announced cast.
One fan wrote, “Madelyn Cline, don’t say anything else.”
“I’m here and sitting,” another commented with a photo of Madelyn.
A third commenter tweeted: “Amazing.”

“This movie is much more stylish,” commented a fourth with a gif of Camila.
One fan explained: “Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline (joined the cast) are already AMAZING.”
They continued, “Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. reprise their roles are even more AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“This is already more EXCITING even before the trailer [comes] out”, concluded the fan.
Another wrote: “This is a stacked cast. We will be watching.”
“Must be a good remake!” added a third.
A fourth joked: “This reboot has a killer lineup, literally.”
Not all reactions were positive, however, with one person responding: “I’m sorry, but who, who and who?”
“Why are they making another one?” questioned another.
A third person complained: “For God’s sake, not every movie requires a reboot.”
The model for the new version of the horror film is the 2022 Scream reboot, which saw several members of the original cast star alongside young newcomers, according to the outlet.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was the surprise hit of 1997.
The teen horror film was a box office success and turned its entire young cast into movie stars.

However, 27 years later, it was revealed that the film was involved in a secret behind-the-scenes rivalry that fans knew nothing about.
The film follows four friends who, after a night of partying, accidentally run over a man and dump his body to hide their secret.
However, the following summer, their actions come back to haunt them, with terrible repercussions.
The teenagers are the target of a bloodthirsty fisherman bent on revenge.
The film turned actors like Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr.
Fast forward almost three decades since the film was released and it seems that all was not well for one person when it hit theaters.
It turned out that the author who wrote the book from which the horror film was adapted was never satisfied with how the film turned out.
The late writer Loise Duncan wrote the novel I Know What You Did Last Summer in 1973.
It has since been noted how extremely different the book was from the final product.
It got to the point where Lois, who sold the film rights for $150,000, refused to visit the set after reading the script and being mortified to see the final version.
In an unearthed interview, Lois, who passed away in 2016, did not hesitate to give her opinion on the film.
The author said of the film: “There is no way I want to be part of desensitizing children to violence and turning murder into a game to see who can scream the loudest.”
I Know What You Did Last Summer hit theaters in 1997, with the book being adapted into a screenplay by Kevin Williamson.
The screenwriter is known for his teen horror films, like the Scream franchise, and TV shows like The Vampire Diaries.

Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar has revealed that she will not be part of the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.
Speaking with Entertainment tonightthe actress quelled rumors that she was in talks to return to the film, even though her friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing it.

In the interview, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer star talked about how she and her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. recently watched the film again.
She said: “My husband is starting a podcast about old horror movies and the first one they are doing on their podcast is I Know What You Did Last Summer.
“So he was at home watching it and I honestly don’t think he’s seen it since it came out.
“I was watching that scene when she was two seconds away from getting to the party and then they caught her.”
