All anyone wants for Christmas is our country’s pop divas dominating the music charts – and Cher and Mariah Carey have delivered Santa-centric murders in the billboard Hot 100 this holiday season.
Cher’s festive foray into Christmas music led to the 77-year-old singer’s first US chart entry in 21 years, as her dance-oriented holiday hit “DJ plays a Christmas song” entered this week’s rankings at No. 94 – his first position on the country’s main charts since 2002’s “Song for the Lonely” reached No. 85 more than two decades ago.
The publication revealed the icon’s chart achievement on the same day that Carey’s perennial holiday hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You” achieved its 14th week overall at No. 1 on the chart, making Carey the only artist in history of music to have three songs governing the billboard Hot 100 in that period, after his collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day” lasted 16 weeks from 1995 to 1996, and “We Belong Together” topped for 14 weeks in 2005.
“All I Want for Christmas Is You” reached number one in December 2019, 25 years after its original release. Since then, it has returned to number one every year, racking up nearly 2 billion streams on Spotify alone. The song also extended Carey’s record as the artist with the most non-consecutive weeks at number one, with the song giving the artist her 93rd week at the top of the chart since she launched her career.
“When it came out, it was more gradual,” Carey previously told EW of the song’s sustained success. “It was popular, but it didn’t have what it has now. I feel like people have grown up with the music and it’s become a part of people’s lives in terms of how they celebrate the holidays. as someone who loves Christmas so much.”
At the billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, Parent Album “All I Want for Christmas Is You” Merry Christmas returned to the top 10 this week, while Cher’s Christmas so far it has reached 32nd position. Cher promoted the album’s release with several high-profile TV performances, including one at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade that was interrupted by a brief Christmas glitch in the live broadcast.
