He was a record producer, musician, audio engineer and music journalist who recorded albums for icons such as Nirvana, Pixies and PJ Harvey.
In 1997, he founded the Electrical Audio recording studio in Chicago.
Albini was also the lead singer of the rock bands Shellac and Big Black, having worked with the latter from 1982 to 1987.
He founded Shellac in 1992 alongside Todd Trainer and Bob Weston.
As Forced reported, Shellac was gearing up to tour her first album since 2014’s To All Trains before Albini’s tragic death.
The album is set to be released on Friday, May 17, 2024.
It is currently unknown whether the album’s release will be postponed.

Pitchfork reported that Albini died of a heart attack, according to the team at Electric Audio.
“Stunned by the death of Steve Albini. Unquestionably a giant of American indie rock, he seemed to be in the midst of a personal and professional renaissance,” said music critic Steven Hyden. he wrote in X.
“He was always interesting, even when he was maddening. And his drum sound is one of the best in recorded music. RIP.”
