Billie’s last stop was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where she jokingly recounted how she “almost died” after being submerged underwater for hours to capture the album cover.

“This was the day after the last Grammys,” the Ocean Eyes singer explained as Stephen showed off her album cover floating in the water.

“I went to bed at 7 a.m., woke up, dyed my hair black… and then went to a random place in Santa Clarita. There’s a tank in this giant place and it was like 10 feet deep, and I blew my ass in there and I was there for six hours,” Billie recalled.

She further revealed that she was fully clothed with a “weight strapped to me,” so she remained in place for the camera.

“I didn’t have a nose plug, so I basically spent six hours waterboarding,” the Bad Guy singer told the host.

Billie then joked that she almost faced death “so many times” during filming to capture the best photo.

BILLIE’S VISION

Despite the terrifying experience, the Everything I Wanted singer admitted it was her idea to do the photo shoot underwater.

“I need to suffer,” Billie said. “I swear to God, yes. It’s not like, ‘What can I do that’s more uncomfortable than I could dream of?’ It’s more that I think about the look before I think about how it will make me feel. I’m like, ‘I want to be fully clothed underwater, with my eyes open, upside down,’ and then I deal with how horrible that is.”

Around the same time, she teased her upcoming tour by posting a photo of her wearing her new merch.

Billie recently appeared on the cover of Rolling Stonewhere she described her new album as an opportunity to “reintroduce herself”.

The pop star explained that she had to “revisit” her past to create new music, especially after battling depression and opening up about her sexuality last year.

Billie shared with Variety that she was attracted to both men and women and even shared a kiss with influencer Quenlin Blackwell at Coachella earlier this month.

MORE ABOUT THE ALBUM

“I feel like this album is me,” the songwriter told Rolling Stone.

“It’s not a character. It feels like the version of me when we all fall asleep, where do we go? It feels like my youth and who I was as a kid.”

Billie also praised the album’s title, Hit Me Hard and Soft, calling it “a perfect encapsulation” of the songs’ effects.

“It’s an impossible request: you can’t take a hard, soft hit. You can’t do anything strong and soft at the same time,” said the article What Am I Made For? said the singer.

“I’m a pretty extreme person and I really like it when things are very physically intense, but I also love it when things are very tender and sweet,” Billie added.
