The series aired on the streaming platform in November 2021, and a second season was released in September 2022.

Dogs in Space followed the canine adventures of Garbage, Stella and Ed, among others, who are genetically enhanced dogs sent across the universe in hopes of finding a new home for the human race.

It ran for 20 episodes and the voice cast included Haley Joel Osment, Sarah Chalke, Kimiko Glenn and Chris Parnell.

James Hamilton, the series’ head writer, was asked in early August 2024 if Dogs in Space had been cancelled, the writer said: “It was, I’m scared!”

Fans were devastated by news of the cancellation when one fan took to X – formerly known as Twitter – to write: “Dogs in Space has been cancelled, this is the worst.”

Another added: “I am very disappointed with this news. Dogs in Space was such a good show.

A third wrote: “NOO :(( I love dogs in space.”

It’s common for most Netflix original animated kids’ shows to go beyond their initial order, which typically consists of one or two seasons.

If the show is a huge success, it may receive additional season orders, but given the run-length nature of animated projects, this is often not the case.

Earlier this year, it was announced that My Dad is a Bounty Hunter would not go beyond its initial order.

Popular sitcom will be revived by Netflix 37 years after debut

James Hamilton has hinted that the Dogs in Space show has been canceled in November 2023.

He wrote in one thread: “I’m immensely proud of Dogs and all the hard work our writing team has done to make this show as special as it is.

“We worked hard and it shows how funny, emotional and intelligent the stories are.

“While there were ideas for future episodes – and yes, that cliffhanger – I can’t say for sure what more Dogs In Space would be like.

“But for what it’s worth, I believe they found a new planet and were successful in their mission.

“Even though the Season 2 finale is the final canonical ending — maybe Jeremiah will find a way to tell more stories with these characters someday, depending on how tangled the rights are — I really feel good about where we leave the Pluto crew, even though they hadn’t yet found a new home.

“While I know it might be disappointing to have seen the series end where it did… personally, I felt great closure writing the final scene where Garbage says “Let’s find a new planet!”

“Because after everything he’s been through and everything he’s learned, I knew he would.”
