LATE Night with Seth Meyers was forced to say goodbye to his house band following further budget cuts at NBC.
The band, a constant presence in the series since the premiere of the first episode in 2014, received the ax for the 12th season, which will air in September.
The band is fronted by SNL alum Fred Armisen, along with guitarist Seth Jabour, bassist Syd Butler and keyboardist Eli Janney.
After Late Night With Seth Meyers ends its current season, Eli, who is also the show’s associate musical director, said it will undergo a “makeover.”
“They had been trying to resolve this for months, but in the end NBC was adamant about where they wanted the budget to go,” the keyboardist said. Vulture.
Eli added that NBC gave them more than three months notice, giving them enough time to find their next job.
Although the band may no longer play live, they will still continue to be a part of the nightly shows.
“We’ll still make music for them, but we won’t play live,” Eli explained. “That’s a cool thing they discovered.”
The show’s staff members were also laid off due to budget cuts, which Eli said was expected given the direction the broadcasting world is heading.
“Unfortunately, it’s the reality of broadcasting and a shrinking market – streaming consuming this and YouTube consuming that,” he said.
“Streaming is also not making money. So budgets everywhere have been cut and cut and cut.”
Admitting that the band is “a little sad about this,” Eli said they will still leave on a positive note.
“That’s mainly what we’re doing: trying to make the most of the time we have,” added the musician.
Seth Meyers, 50, replaced Jimmy Fallon, 49, on the late-night show in 2014.
