Netflix axing the prequel series to the hit show in another blow to fans after a major cast shake-up

NETFLIX has cut an upcoming series as part of its latest series of programming cuts.

Fantasy drama The Witcher, starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, a magically enhanced monster hunter, announced last week that its upcoming fourth series would be its last.

Cavill played the lead role in the first three seasons, but Liam Hemsworth will take on the role of Geralt from season four onwards.

Following the success of The Witcher on the streaming platform, Netflix developed a spin-off series titled The Rats.

It would have focused on the group of renegades that Ciri (Freya Allan) joined at the end of season three.

However, plans for the spin-off, which was supposed to be a prequel series with six to eight episodes, were shelved.

This comes after Netflix’s announcement that while The Witcher will also return for season four, this will be the show’s final release.

Premiering in December 2019, a total of 24 episodes have aired to date.

The story comes from the book series of the same name by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski, comprising six novels and 15 short stories.

The show is set on a fictional medieval-inspired landmass known as The Continent.

Witchers are ordinary humans who are taken in as children, trained and physically modified for the purpose of killing monsters.

The cast also includes Anya Chalotra, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey and Anna Shafer, among others.
