THE BOYS showrunner has revealed that the new Mexico-set spinoff has hit a major hurdle in its quest to become a series.
Actors Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna are producing The Boys: Mexico under their La Corriente del Golfo banner.
Last year, Gael, 45, confirmed that the spinoff had been greenlit, as well as his involvement with it, when speaking to Variety.
The Cassandro star told the outlet: “I’m really excited about what we can do because we can do something really interesting in Latin America.”
However, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke provided a disappointing update on the upcoming spin-off during an interview with Weekly entertainment.
“They are still closing the deal with the pilot writer,” he revealed.
Eric added: “He has an amazing tone, and we all laughed and thought how fun it would be. But there are a lot of hurdles for this show before it can be a real show.
“He has to write an amazing pilot, he probably has to write an amazing Episode 2. I think it can and will, but we’re a while away from actually starting to roll out the Easter eggs and the settings and stuff.”
Eric confessed that in addition to just being an “incredible pilot”, the program needs to be able to stand on its own, without viewers having to watch the other series in The Boys universe.
“I really don’t want people to feel like they have to watch a [show] understand each other,” he told EW.
The showrunner continued, “I never want it to feel like homework or required viewing. I think it hurt Marvel in a lot of ways, and I don’t want to do that.
“I want you to watch both shows. It certainly broadens your enjoyment and experience of both shows because you understand some of the history of where things came from, but it’s in no way necessary.”
THE BOYS: MEXICO
In November last year, Variety reported that Amazon has greenlit a The Boys spinoff set in Mexico.
The Spanish-language series will be in the same universe as the Amazon Prime original series based on the graphic novels by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson of the same name.

As with The Boys, the new series will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios.
Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, co-writer of the DCEU film Blue Beetle and the person with whom a deal has not yet been made, is attached to write.
Eric will produce the series along with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver of Point Gray Pictures and Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film.
As mentioned, Andor stars Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal are producing the series under their La Corriente del Golfo banner.
