Max cancels The Girls On The Bus after just one season, despite final episode ending with shocking cliffhanger

MAX’s The Girls on the Bus was canceled despite the first season ending on a cliffhanger.

The Girls on the Bus was a political drama series that chronicled the lives of four journalists who followed a parade of flawed presidential candidates.

Max decided not to proceed with the second season of The Girls on the Bus just two weeks after the release of the season 1 finale, due to Deadline.

“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of The Girls on the Bus, we are grateful to have partnered with the immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. ,” Max said in a statement about the cancellation.

He continued: “We are so proud of this powerful story of found family and the celebration of journalism, in all its forms. We thank them and our incomparable cast for all of their incredible work and collaboration.”

The series starred and executive produced by Melissa Benoist, who played Sadie McCarthy, a journalist for The New York Sentinel who romanticizes a bygone era of campaign reporting.

The first season showed her leaving behind the life she had created to try to cover a presidential candidate for an official newspaper.

In the process, she bonds with fellow journalists Grace Gordon Greene played by Carla Gugino, Lola Rahaii played by Natasha Behnam and Kimberlyn Anaya Kendrick played by Christina Elmore.

While the cancellation may come as a shock to fans, it’s not entirely surprising as the ratings for the Julie Plec and Amy Chozick-created series failed to crack the Top 10 of Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings.

The Girls on the Bus was an adaptation of Chozick’s 2018 bestselling memoir Chasing Hillary.

Showrunner Rina Mimoun revealed that despite the series’ title, future seasons would not be confined to a campaign bus when speaking to TV Line.

Season 1, which ended on a cliffhanger, followed the primaries, while Season 2 would have gotten reporters off the bus and onto a plane while they covered the general election.

Deadline revealed that The Girls On the Bus has arrived at Max after receiving a series order at Netflix and then moving to The CW for development.

Chozick, Plec and Mimoun executive produced the series with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Leigh London Redman and Marcos Siega.

Jesse Peretz executive produced and directed the series pilot, Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros.
