In the Netflix production, Shonda explores the cultural impact that the doll has, as well as the story behind the creation of the first Black Barbie, in 1980.

The TV star explained on the morning show that she wanted to showcase dolls that represented black people, which was always her intention for her daughters.

Shonda also revealed her own Black Barbies, made specifically to look like her, from their body shape to their facial features.

“I was so excited. I felt like a kid again!” Shonda said about having a doll replica of herself.

Black Barbie premieres on Netflix on June 19th.

“Shonda is on the rise,” boasted another.

“It will be a great watch, I’m excited about this doc,” said a third.
