MAX viewers were furious online after the streaming platform announced a series of changes in recent months.

HBO’s streaming service costs viewers $9.99 to $19.99 a month, but fans called for a boycott after it appeared to cancel their favorite shows and raise prices.

Shows like Our Flag Means Death and The Flight Attendant were recently canceled by HBO.

Fans, although initially upset on social media, went a step further and created an online campaign to try and dissuade users from paying for the Max.

On X, formerly Twitter, angry followers created the tag #Don’tStreamOnMax to emphasize their annoyance.

A fan-led group called Adopt Our Crew emerged earlier this year after news broke that their favorite show, Our Flag Means Death, was being canceled.

The show followed pirates on their adventures and featured important LGBTQ+ characters.

The group generated more than 85 thousand signatures to prevent the program from failing, despite all efforts, the creator announced that it would not go ahead.

From then on, the group was behind the boycott and released a graphic on social media to give instructions to other viewers.

In the text graphic, they have listed four reasons why they are trying to call the service.

This included HBO reportedly “Removing Diverse Content” and “Canceling Critically Acclaimed Programs.”

At the bottom of the graphic, they asked fans to use the hashtag and add comments to spread their message.

Several social media users used their phones and computers to add their own comments.

“I #DontStreamOnMax because they talk about ‘quality’ but cancel their diverse, more critically acclaimed shows in favor of underperforming shows and big IPs,” wrote one angry follower.

“HBO was once a prestigious channel, now it leads the death of television”, they concluded.

“There is nothing but crappy reality shows and whitewashed programs about rich people. If you want diversity and good storytelling, go somewhere else,” added another.

“I #DontStreamOnMax because a very talented showrunner made sure to give a hit television show Our Flag Means Death a happy ending in Season 2 just in case it didn’t get renewed, which it didn’t, and it’s a crime that people talented women commit to sacrificing their vision rather than embracing it,” said a third.

“#DontStreamOnMax because they cancel all their best scripted miscellaneous shows,” emphasized a fourth.

Our Flag Means Death, from HBO

Our Flag Means Death was officially canceled by HBO after two seasons.

The show followed a man Stede Bonnet, played by Rhys Darby, who decided to become a pirate. He recruits a crew who sail the seas together and engage in exciting adventures. They even cross paths with Blackbeard.

The HBO show has quickly become a fan favorite, with the cast having a particular focus on the LGBTQ+ community.

When news spread that the show was being canceled, fans formed a group called Renew as a Crew.

The online group came together and gained more than 85,000 signatures on a petition in an attempt to get the program back up and running.

The show’s creator, David Jenkins, broke the news on his social media in early March, but did not explain the reason for the end.

Cast members include:

  • Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet,
  • Ewen Bremner as Nathaniel Buttons
  • Joel Fry as French
  • Samson Kayo as Oluwande Boodhari
  • Nathan Foad as Lucius Spriggs
  • Vico Ortiz as Jim Jiménez
  • Matthew Maher as Black Pete
  • Kristian Nairn as Wee John Feeney
  • Rory Kinnear as Captain Nigel Badminton
  • Con O’Neill as Israel “Izzy” Hands,
  • Guz Khan as Ivan
  • David Fane as Kevin/Fang
  • Taika Waititi as Blackbeard
  • Samba Schutte as Roach

After the hashtag was first used in May, Warner Brothers announced that it would increase the price of its service.

On Tuesday, they announced that the price to watch HBO ad-free will increase to $16.99 from the previous price of $15.99.

“’Everyone is complaining about our company’s service and the #DontStreamOnMax tag is growing at an alarming rate, what do we do?’ ‘uuuuh, fuck, uhh, raise the price’,” user X responded to the news.

NAVIGATING

David Jenkins, the show’s creator, shared an emotional post on Instagram to announce the end of Our Flag Means Death.

He carried a Photograph of an atmospheric sandy beach.

In the sand, someone had drawn the Jolly Roger flag.

“I can officially confirm that we have reached the end of the road. At least when it comes to this sweet show,” he captioned the photo.

“After many meetings, complimentary conversations, etc., it appears there is no alternative home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us tremendous love and care.

“Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But most importantly, it made all of us who worked on this program better able to deal with loss.”

“To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are kind and sincere. This kind of thing sometimes seems sparse. But it’s not,” David continued.

“A love like ours can’t disappear in an instant. When we say goodbye in the mystic, say hello. We won’t say goodbye, because we won’t leave.”

“We’re just breathing until the next time we can share something together,” he concluded.
