The fantasy drama House of the Dragon is a prequel to the smash hit Game of Thrones, which aired on HBO from 2011 to 2019.

As a prequel, the story portrayed in House of the Dragon takes place approximately 200 years before the events of The Game of Thrones.

The original show was based on the A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels by George RR Martin.

The plot of House of the Dragon depicts the decline of House Targaryen.

This lineage was most notably represented in Game of Thrones by Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), a main character throughout the series.

As such, the central figures of Season 1 of House of the Dragon include King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine), a kind and decent king.

The set also characteristics Younger brother Prince Daemon Targaryen (played by former Doctor Who star Matt Smith), a fierce warrior who is more unpredictable than his brother.

Ahead of the second season’s release later this month, HBO announced that the hit show will also return for a third outing.

The network’s head of programming and drama series, Francesca Orsi shared the update in a statement.

Francesca said: “We are in awe of the mammoth effort the entire team has put into creating a spectacular second season, with a scope and scale that can only be rivaled by its heart.

“We couldn’t be more excited to continue the story of House Targaryen and see this team shine again in season three.”

She also praised George RR Martin and showrunner Ryan Condal for their work.
