After three Beverly Hills crime films between 1984 and 1994, Eddie took a 30-year hiatus from the acclaimed role of Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who ventures to California while pursuing his best friend’s killers.

A fourth film was first announced in the 1990s, but was shelved indefinitely – until this year.

Now, fans of the franchise who have waited decades to see it don’t hesitate to praise it.

“I was watching Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. A fun sequence full of nostalgia. Eddie Murphy is in top form,” wrote one fan on X.

“Without going into details, this Beverly Hills cop is [fire] definitely on the same level as the first 2”, wrote another.

“Beverly Hills Cop was excellent!” a third added.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is how you bring back a classic,” added another in response to the trailer.

“Well played, Netflix. Well played. It was perfect perfection.”

Eddie revealed that the new film, which debuted on Netflix on Wednesday, has seen almost continuous struggles over the past three decades.

“We’ve been trying to develop another Beverly Hills Cop since 1996,” the actor told New York Times.

“The third film we made in 1994, I didn’t think the film came out good.

“There were ten different scripts and several different producers and we tried for years and years and it wouldn’t work until we got Jerry (Bruckheimer), the original producer, involved.

The film follows Axel, in his trademark Detroit Lions varsity jacket, and his old friends as he returns to Beverly Hills after someone threatens his daughter Jane, played by Taylour Paige.

MEET THE CAST

Netflix has brought back some of the original film’s most beloved characters.

Returning cast members include Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot.

The film also introduces new stars to the franchise, such as Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

The soundtrack features Harold Faltermeyer’s original Axel F theme song, reworked by rapper Lil Nas X.

A look at returning cast members

Several former Beverly Hills Cop cast members are reprising their roles in the new sequel.

The returning actors and their characters are:

  • Eddie Murphy-Axel Foley
  • Judge Reinhold – Lieutenant Billy Rosewood
  • John Ashton – John Taggart
  • Paul Reiser – Jeffrey Friedman
  • Bronson Pinchot – Serge

Actress Chantal Nchako recently opened up to The US Sun about working with the iconic cast of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and shared that she was able to form a bond with the lead.

Chantal told Eddie that she is from Cameroon and that when he did the film Trading Places, he mentioned that he was an exchange student from there.

“You really put us on the map. Thank you for always honoring Africa,” she told Eddie.

He also honed in on his African heritage in the film Coming To America.

Chantal continued: “And he looks at me and just smiles.

“After that, we started riffing. I called him Mr. Murphy.

“He said ‘Please don’t call me Mr. Murphy. It makes me feel old,’” Chantal laughed.
