DIRECTOR Susanne Bier has once again teamed up with Nicole Kidman for a mystery series that will make its debut on a major streaming service.
Following the success of HBO’s 2020 hit series The Undoing, Nicole Kidman is set to star in another thriller series, The Perfect Couple, in a role that some fans find all too familiar.
A BEACH, A BRIDE AND A BODY
On Thursday, July 11, Netflix released a trailer for its upcoming mystery drama series, The Perfect Couple.
The series is based on a 2018 novel by Elin Hilderbrand, dubbed “the queen of beach reads” by several media outlets, including Glam.
The Perfect Couple centers on a bride, Amelia Sacks, played by Eve Hewson, and a groom, Benji Winbury, played by Billy Howle, in the weeks leading up to their wedding day.
Hewson is best known for playing Lucy Elkins on the Showtime medical drama The Knick and for her film roles in Bridge of Spies (2015), Robin Hood (2018), Tesla (2020) and Flora and Son (2023).

Howle most recently played Allen Lafferty in the 2022 Hulu series Under the Banner of Heaven and has appeared in several films, including Dunkirk (2017), Outlaw King (2018), and Kid Snow (2024).
Unfortunately, not everyone agrees with the marriage, as Benji’s mother, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury, played by Nicole Kidman, disapproves of the couple’s impending nuptials.
Still, she spared no expense in planning what will be the premiere event of the summer, only to be faced with a major problem: a dead body, washed up on the beach at her Nantucket home.
“They’re rich,” reflects Stuart Whelan, who plays a police officer in the series.
“Kill someone and get away with it,” he adds, as heard in the show’s trailer.
The trailer shows clips from the show alongside an eerie remix of Frankie Valli’s hit Can’t Take My Eyes off You.
Nicole’s icy, steely gaze, directed at the camera – and the viewer – offers a chilling foreshadowing of what’s to come as the lyrics ring out: “You’re too good to be true / I can’t take my eyes off you.” .
NANTUCKET NEIGHBORS
Nicole Kidman may be the star of the show, but she’s accompanied by some very familiar faces.
Liev Schreiber stars as Nicole’s husband and father of the groom, Tag Winbury, while Dakota Fanning plays the couple’s daughter.
Rounding out the cast is Meghann Fahy, who received critical and commercial praise for her portrayal of Daphne Sullivan in HBO’s The White Lotus, Omar Epps, Jack Reynor, Sam Nivola and Mia Isaac.
Nick Searcy, Donna Lynne Champlin, Ishaan Khattar and Isabelle Adjani also star.
The Netflix thriller is set to hit the streaming service on Wednesday, September 5, 2024, right after Labor Day weekend.
PERFECT IMAGE
“The perfect life has a lot to hide”, according to the program’s slogan.
The trailer introduces viewers to Winbury’s seemingly perfect life and then shows that, as always, nothing is as it seems.
As their lives unravel and secrets are revealed, Nicole’s character, Greer, continues to try to maintain the facade of a happy, normal family.
“We never know what’s really going on in someone’s mind,” her character reflects in the trailer.
“It doesn’t matter how close you are,” she adds, flashing a fake smile for a family photograph in the trailer’s last scene.
BEACH FANS
The trailer racked up over 200,000 views within hours of its release, with most viewers praising Nicole’s performance and the show’s eerie beach-reading atmosphere.
“Wow, Nicole is reserved,” one viewer commented.
“Nicole adding another wig to the collection. We love seeing this,” wrote one user.
“Whenever I stay at The White Lotus Nantucket, I always have a memorable time,” commented another YouTube user.
“Big Little Lies looks like a lot of chaos,” commented another viewer, referring to one of Kidman’s previous shows.
Still, some users pointed out that despite her incredible acting skills, they believe Nicole is being typecast.
“Is Nicole Kidman being stigmatized?”. asked a spectator.
“Why are all the roles she has on TV today so distressing?[ed] upper class wife in the middle of [a] criminal scandal involving her suspect husband??”, they added.
“Nicole Kidman literally everything is getting boring…” commented another viewer of the trailer.
“Nicole is doing the same shows and movies over and over,” another user commented.
How many movies has Nicole made for Netflix at once?” asked another viewer, referring to Nicole’s 2024 film for the streamer, the romantic comedy A Family Affair.
