It captivated fans across the world and became the site’s biggest show of all time in an unexpectedly successful move.

Now the show will return for a second series, but this exciting news came with the bittersweet announcement.

Although a third series has been commissioned, it will also be the last.

Along with the news of the return date in Boxing Day, December 26th, a brief provocation trailer has been released.

It had an Olympic style theme showing a track race going wrong, as dozens of Squid Game competitors in their distinctive green costumes race to survive.

Viewers then see a small podium with the mysterious character Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) entering the scene.

He oversees the Squid Game and as chaos erupts among the halls, he is flanked on each side by four of his pink-suited henchmen.

He then says in Korean, “It’s been three years. Do you want to play again?”

The show’s success also spawned a reality show called Squid Game: The Challenge.

Meanwhile, Lee Jung-jae, who played the main character Seong Gi-hun in the first season, recently teased what fans can expect from the second season.

In an interview with RadioTimes, Lee admitted: “I think the script as season 2 is even more interesting than season 1, and there will be a new set of characters as well.

“So I think the audience is going to be really excited about it.

“One thing I felt when reading the script is that there’s an even deeper emotion uncovered in season two, and I also think the audience is going to feel like, ‘Where is this story going?’

“Because there are so many twists and turns that happen.”
