SUMMER offers many health benefits – better mental wellbeing, the opportunity to be more physically active and sleep better.

But some men list another advantage that warmer weather can bring, and it’s a phenomenon known as “summer penis.”

'Summer penis' is something many men have noticed and talked about during the warmer months

As the heat increases, they believe it has a flattering effect on their length and girth below.

But is this really a thing? Dr Chun Tang, GP at private health clinic Pall Mall Medicalweighed.

He said: “So, ‘summer penis’ is a term people use to describe when a man’s penis looks a little bigger or fuller during hot weather.

“It’s not an official medical thing, just something people noticed and talked about.

“The idea is that in the warmer months, especially when it’s hot and humid, the heat causes the blood vessels to expand a little, which can make things down there feel a little different.”

In terms of symptoms, men who try their penis in the summer may see a little more size or fullness than usual.

Dr Tang added: “Some men notice that their penis appears a little larger, especially when it is flaccid.

“Due to increased blood flow, it may feel a little softer or more relaxed than usual.”

In a world of “showers and producers”, this could be considered a way to promote some equality.

But Dr. Tang noted that if you’re particularly sensitive to temperature changes, you’re more likely to notice the effect.

I saw a spot similar to a cold sore on my penis, months later it was amputated

There is no exact temperature where the ‘summer penis’ kicks in, according to Dr. Tang.

But any situation where it’s really hot outside — like during a summer heat wave — is more likely.

He said: “When it’s hot, your body tries to cool down naturally by dilating blood vessels, which can cause more blood to flow to places like your hands, feet and even your penis.”

So, if you want a ‘summer penis’, it might be an idea to wear loose, breathable clothing, like a legal pair of cotton boxers or shorts.

This can make your penis more noticeable because there’s nothing restricting blood flow, experts say.

On the other hand, wearing something tight, like skinny jeans or tight underwear, can prevent the effect because it can limit circulation.

Unfortunately, either way, it won’t have any impact on your sexual performance.

Penis fact vs fiction

From evolutionary explanations for why penises can look like mushrooms to whether they can get smaller, Dr. Philippa Kaye answers questions you’re afraid to ask.

1. What is the average penis size?

The average size of a penis is approximately 9 cm when flaccid/soft and approximately 13 cm when erect.

A micropenis is defined as a penis that measures less than 7 cm. You can get treatment for this on the NHS.

But this is just the length of the penis on the outside – you may not know it, but there is approximately the same length of penile tissue on the inside as on the outside, extending into the pelvis.

2. Does your shoe size reflect your penis size?

No. A study that looked at the penises of more than 100 men of various ages looked at shoe size and penis length and found no correlation between the two.

3. Why is the penis shaped like a mushroom?

From an evolutionary point of view, it is perhaps obvious that the shaft of the penis is cylindrical or tubular in shape, so that it can fit inside the muscular tube of the vagina.

But there is a ridge between the top of the penis shaft and the glans, which is shaped like a mushroom.

One theory that explains why this happens is known as the “semen displacement theory,” which suggests that the shape of this ridge essentially pulls out and removes any sperm left in the vagina by a previous partner, who may be a genetic rival in evolution. wise.

4. Can you break your penis?

There are no bones in the penis, but you can still break it.

During an erection, there are spongy tissues called corpora cavernosa, which fill with blood to make the penis erect.

If there is trauma, often a violent twisting or bending movement when the penis is erect, part of the covering of the corpus cavernosum called the tunica albuginea can burst, causing bleeding in the penis and very painful swelling.

It’s rare and tends to occur during sex, usually when the partner is on top.

5. Can the penis point in any direction?

Yes. When the penis is erect, it can point in any direction, from straight up, forward, to straight down, as found in a study involving nearly 1,500 men.

It is normal for the penis to have a slight curve in either direction. In fact, a curve between 5 and 30 degrees is considered healthy and normal.

6. Can your penis get smaller?

Yes, your penis can shrink. There are many causes for this, including high blood pressure and peripheral vascular disease, which can lead to decreased blood flow to the penis.

Low testosterone levels and aging can also affect penis size, as can a significant curve due to Peyronie’s disease.

Some types of prostate cancer treatment, such as radical prostatectomy, can affect penis size.

7. Are multiple erections at night normal?

You might think that wet dreams are associated with puberty, but in fact, the average healthy man has three to five erections a night, with morning glory being the last of them.

They seem more likely to occur in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, but the cause is not known.

8. ‘Showers’ or ‘producers’?

The size of your penis when flaccid does not necessarily predict the size when erect, as small penises are more likely to increase proportionally more in length than longer ones.

A study from the 1980s showed that, on average, longer penises increased by just under 50% from flaccid to erect, while shorter penises increased by almost 90%.

And when penises are erect there is less variation in length – flaccid penises vary in length by about 3cm, but only about 1.7cm when erect.

9. Can creams and oils enlarge your penis?

No, they can’t. The only proven way to increase the size of your penis is through surgery, which can increase both length and girth.

Surgery to increase penis length involves cutting a ligament that connects the penis to the pelvis, but this only affects the length of the penis when it is flaccid.

Surgical treatments to increase girth may involve a fat transplant or the use of an implant.

Dr. Sarah Jarvis, general practitioner and clinical director of Patient.infopreviously told The Sun: “Technically, when you’re hot, as well as when you’re excited, your blood vessels can expand.

“When the blood vessels on the surface are a little bigger, things will look a little bigger.

“But your penis isn’t growing, it’s just your blood vessels growing a little more as a way to reduce the heat.

“It also won’t make you perform better – when you’re erect, your penis is swollen to the maximum, anyway.”

By itself, ‘summer penis’ isn’t a sign of anything serious, but there are some scenarios where it’s a good idea to get checked out by a doctor.

Dr Chun Tang

Once the weather cools down, you can expect things to return to normal.

But if “summer penis” makes you uncomfortable, Dr. Tang advises staying calm.

“Avoid too much heat, wear loose clothing and stay well hydrated,” he said.

“This can help minimize the effect.”

Dr. Tang added: “By itself, ‘summer penis’ is not a sign of anything serious.

“But, if you notice any sudden or unusual changes to your penis – such as significant swelling, pain or discomfort – then it’s definitely a good idea to see a doctor.

“These could be signs of something that needs attention, like an infection or injury.”

How to take care of your penis

Are you taking care of your penis correctly?

Here are all the dos and don’ts when it comes to penis health:

  1. Keep your penis clean to prevent smegma buildup – aiming to wash it once a day with warm water – and dry it well with a towel
  2. Avoid using strong, scented soap or very hot water
  3. Don’t forget to clean under the foreskin – gently pull the skin back and wash underneath with warm water
  4. Don’t wear dirty underwear again
  5. Check your testicles for lumps and make sure you know what they normally look like
  6. Be sure to use a condom when having sex with someone new or a casual partner to avoid STIs
  7. Don’t ignore STI symptoms – such as unusual discharge, pain when peeing, lumps, sores, warts or rashes
  8. Don’t be ashamed to talk to your doctor about erectile dysfunction

But it’s not just the penis that reacts to hot weather; the rest of the body also suffers (or benefits).

You may notice your ankles get a little bigger due to fluid retention, or maybe your thighs start to feel irritated.

People with eczema may experience a worsening of their skin condition when the weather warms up, and asthma sufferers may also experience coughing and shortness of breath.

You may feel happier, more relaxed and sleep better due to increased exposure to sunlight, which can increase the production of melatonin and serotonin and regulate the body’s internal clock, says the NHS.

And of course, there’s no escaping the additional sweat.

When temperatures really rise, or you spend a lot of time in them, you can become exhausted or heat stroke.

Heat exhaustion usually doesn’t need emergency medical help if you can calm down within 30 minutes.

Try things like moving to a cooler place, using a fan, taking off extra layers, drinking cold liquids, and using a cool flannel or sponge.

But heatstroke needs to be treated as quickly as possible as it can be fatal, so call 999.

This is because the body’s systems that it uses to try to keep you cool have become overloaded and stopped working, so your temperature can rise to over 40°C and you stop sweating.
